New EOS 3

Well, I just bought a "gently used" EOS 3 and I can't wait to use it! I'm going to take a B&W darkroom class next quarter, my last quarter, at OSU, so I decided to get a nice film SLR that I can use for a while.

What should I know about film photography that digital doesn't contain. Plus, what are good online resources I should peruse?

I find my EOS-3 generally slightly under exposes when there are no bright highlights in the frame and I use centerweighted averaging metering. But this is probably a attribute of the greater dynamic range in the highlights of film more than the camera under exposing.

Use spot meter (if it has it) and expose for shadows, opposite of digital.

This is a statement that needs to be followed up with explanation.

Even with film, you cannot expose the shadows (the darker portion of the scene) as if it were 12 or 18% grey that the camera is metering as a baseline without using compensation from that reading.

With film or digital I rarely spot meter because you have to know what to spot meter off of if wanting a zero exposure compensation exposure or knowing how to compensate from that spot meter reading. If you use exposure compensation of zero and spot meter off of shadows, you'll end up with over exposed and blown highlights - even with film.
