Just thinking. Would it be worth upgrading to the 50D from my 40D.
For those that have made this upgrade let me know what you think.
Thanks.

One more time :)
Depends.

Advantages of 50D over 40D are:
1. 50D has MUCH better LCD. This is a really BIG deal for me.
2. AutoISO on 50D is working WELL, on 40D it almost doesn't
3. Higher ISOs - 6400 and 12800, sometimes are VERY useful.
4. 15mp vs. 10mp.
5. 50D has Autofocus Micro-adjustment - REALLY useful thing.
6. Better "from camera" control for external flashes of II-series on 50D.
7. Better LiveView, with contrast autofocus and face detection.
8. Useful button "Print" - turns on/off LiveView!

I can't comment; I got tired of crop sensors (I still own a 40D and 20D) and just moved to full frame. I'm already enjoying it more.

I may look tomorrow and see what I can get by trading in the 40D or keeping as a second lens camera.

Do you have both cameras? I do and there is a lot of difference, particularly with noise at 1600 and 3200. The 50D is clearly better in that area.

Just out of curiosity. Is there a reason (or reasons) why the 40D is failing you whereas the 50D can drastically improve? If there is/are, then by all means, make the upgrade: +5mp, microadjust, high rez lcd, wider range of iso.

But if not, why not just continue to take photos on the 40D and wait for the 60D? Because by then, the 60D will almost certainly have everything a 50D has + video mode, possibly even AF in video depending on competition. Or you could make the FF leap of faith and 5d2 already has HD video capture. :D

And since the xxD traditionally have been on a 18mo schedule, but the 50D broke that rule being announced/released 12 months after the 40D, we may expect to see the 60D as early as Oct/Nov '09. :D

I think you should hold onto what you have and save save save for what's next to come. The 5DII is a beautiful piece of electronic goodness but it's version 1.0. Just imagine what's to come later this year. With Nikon randomly spilling rumors about their D400 and such, it's definitely going to encourage Canon to release a 60D or a completely new line of camera bodies. I pulled the trigger and bought two "Version 1.0s" in the last year and paid for it when both companies released new/better versions that were coming out.
There's always something better coming out.... we all know this. Good luck.

P.S. I'm going to a 5D :)

i have to agree. there is always something better and given the time span that canon has been releasing, it might seem better to wait. i'm in a sort of dilemma myself because i own a 400d and i'm SERIOUSLY wanting to upgrade to something better. i've made the mistake in the past by getting something and then realizing that i should have waited a bit longer for something new.

40D, canon 135mm L, 50mm f1.8, 28-70mm L, macbook pro, tripod, shoebox lid, 50D MKII next on the list:D

only because of agressive noise reduction in camera (which is no realy advantage when you have photoshop), looking at samples with n/r off the 40d wins every time

check that
http://www.dpreview.com …ws/canoneos50d/page18.asp (external link)

also looking at sample shots id say the 40d cant out resolve the 50d and is clearly sharper

I have no interest in upgrading my 40d
