I bought one from them just before the rebates ended. Got it at a very attractive price as a Gold Box item. Unfortunately, it was slightly front focusing. I considered sending it to Canon but decided to just exchange it for another with Amazon.

Sent the first one back and then found out a week later that the lens is on backorder until mid March! That's like 6 weeks! I have a wedding to shoot in April. I could have sent by "just barely bad" copy to Canon faster than that.

Amazon offered to refund my purchase but I got it at such a good price there is no way I'm going to do that.

So, I've paid for my 70-200 f/2.8 IS but won't have it for another 6 weeks. I sure hope it focuses OK because I won't have time for a calibration trip to Canon.

It would cost me almost $300 to get it new today. I'm hoping their 1-2 month estimate is longer than it will really take.

Worst case, I can borrow back the one I sold to a friend last week for $1250 because I had a new one :-(

Not sure if this helps at all, but 2 of the 3 times i've bought something that was backordered on amazon, it showed up about 1-2 weeks prior to the estimated date. The other time it showed up exactly when they said it would.

I've bought some stuff on backorder from Amazon myself, like Wakasugi, it's always showed up on or before the date they give you.

I bought a used f/2.8 IS to see if I liked it and found I loved it, but the used lens had AF and IS switches that stuck up a little and I kept bumping them off. When I'm covering an event, I do NOT want the lens to stop AFing all the sudden so I decided to sell it and buy a newer one that had the recessed switches.

Then a brand new one showed up in my Amazon Gold Box for a price I could not pass up.

Understandable then

Personally i hate the recessed switches..i often am trying to get my lens in MF quickly for some reason and messing with that little recessed switch on the 17-55 was always a pain to me

But i can understand the reverse as well :)

People stop returning good merchandise !

Yes, some people keep testing gear till they believe they found something wrong and gladly send it back not bothering that someone will get an open box now. Most probably your next lens will seem to you worse than the previous one and your obvious step will be to return it, and so on ....
Sorry for being negative but I just cannot stand how some abuse the system.
Oh yeah most probably you messed up doing your eternal tests. It always seems to front focus when you do testing but nevertheless it works ok when just taking pictures.
Well at least you got your lesson.

the system allows for returns and believe me it's factored into the cost. if someone gets an open box from a retailer it's the fault of the retailer, not the person who returned the lens.

Wait just a minute there. You've read FAR more into this than I've said and have misrepresented the situation.

I discovered the front focus by shooting a concert and finding EVERY photo was slightly out of focus. Eyes were soft, shoulders were sharp. Some controlled testing after the fact proved that the lens was indeed front focusing. This was not do "eternal testing" and I most certainly did NOT mess it up. The issues with the lens were first observed in the real world and then confirmed through testing.

And no, I have no intention to keep ordering lenses until I get a good one. If the next lens is not right I will just ship it to Canon for repair. Had I known I'd be waiting 6 weeks for my replacement lens, I'd have done that with the first lens.

I have no local dealers so I deal with internet vendors. They all provide return privileges and let you return things for just about any reason. I can just change my mind and can still return it. This is not abusing the system. On the contrary, it is part of the system. Had I ordered 10 copies of the lens so I could go through and hand select the best, then returned the other 9, you might have an argument, but when I order one lens, find it isn't right and ship it back for a replacement, that is hardly abuse.

Should of did what I did, my 17-40 from Amazon had a decentering issue. Instead of sending it to Canon, I had them ship me a brand new lens free of charge. They charge your card if you don't send the old one within 30 days. So I'll have two 17-40s to test

:) don't . That is all good news. They're in stock. Maybe I can call and they'll send mine out rather than waiting until March!

Yes, I see they're back to $1700. I glad I didn't pay that!

Well, I got e-mail from Amazon. They say my lens will be here this coming week, significantly ahead of the original schedule.

:-)
