Yes, some people keep testing gear till they believe they found something wrong and gladly send it back not bothering that someone will get an open box now. Most probably your next lens will seem to you worse than the previous one and your obvious step will be to return it, and so on ....
Sorry for being negative but I just cannot stand how some abuse the system.
Oh yeah most probably you messed up doing your eternal tests. It always seems to front focus when you do testing but nevertheless it works ok when just taking pictures.
Well at least you got your lesson.
Wait just a minute there. You've read FAR more into this than I've said and have misrepresented the situation.
I discovered the front focus by shooting a concert and finding EVERY photo was slightly out of focus. Eyes were soft, shoulders were sharp. Some controlled testing after the fact proved that the lens was indeed front focusing. This was not do "eternal testing" and I most certainly did NOT mess it up. The issues with the lens were first observed in the real world and then confirmed through testing.
And no, I have no intention to keep ordering lenses until I get a good one. If the next lens is not right I will just ship it to Canon for repair. Had I known I'd be waiting 6 weeks for my replacement lens, I'd have done that with the first lens.
I have no local dealers so I deal with internet vendors. They all provide return privileges and let you return things for just about any reason. I can just change my mind and can still return it. This is not abusing the system. On the contrary, it is part of the system. Had I ordered 10 copies of the lens so I could go through and hand select the best, then returned the other 9, you might have an argument, but when I order one lens, find it isn't right and ship it back for a replacement, that is hardly abuse.
