I mount my DSLR in the front of my fishing boat and use a remote release to capture pics of me and notable fish I catch. I'd like to set up something where I can power the camera from the two 12v marine batteries on board. I've searched and found plenty of 12VDC chargers, but I cannot find 12VDC power. I see there are 120V AC units that convert the AC to DC and send it into the dummy camera battery. I'd rather not have to put an inverter on the boat, since I want to minimize things and also not use more power than I have to.

Thanks folks!!

You can buy a battery charger that works on 12V systems (actually more like 13.8V). That would let you charge one battery while the other is in the camera. It only takes a moment or two to swap batteries if the one in the camera dies.

Taking a pre-charged spare battery or two with you is probably the simplest way.

I seriously doubt that you will find any "12V" adapters to power the camera. The AC adapter is one solution, but as you know you'd need an inverter. The cheaper inverters with square wave output may not be good enough.

I don't want to have to keep checking "if" the battery dies. I will be fishing. Plus, you never know when you are going to catch a big one. It isn't the time to be checking the battery when you have a big fish in your hands. I'd really like the confidence that the camera is ready all the time.

A single battery should last all day long very easily if the camera isn't being used a lot. I can't imagine your taking more than a few shots with it the way you describe the setup. Anyway, if you are afraid of the battery failing just change it a few hours out. You don't need to wait until the battery is exhausted to change it.

...or you could buy a battery charger and then make your own cable to go to the camera.

The battery is 7.4V. I'm not sure if the chargers supply the same.

I did find that they sell converters for 12VDC that output various voitages...one being 7.5V.

Thanks All.
