I had an idea in mind when I went for this shot. Came out quite nicely. Framing isn't perfect, neither is the white line above the car. But I'm happy with it.......

Team China at the Taupo (New Zealand) round of the A1 GP held in the weekend just past.

I like the shot.

Something else that might have looked good too, the drivers head in focus and the same effect applied as you have in your shot.

Great picture! I really like it. Do you mind explaining what you did exactly to achieve this effect? Is it just a rotation during a slowish exposure or is there some zooming going on too? I was at the Canadian F1 GP 2 years back and managed to get some great static shots with my S1. Unfortunately I hadn't practiced panning, so I missed out on some great action shots.

That's a picture I could see framed size huge on some MS exec's office wall. Guess it's the wrong colour for Mr Giltrap but surely there's someone who'd buy it...
well done Cliff.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Fut, I have many many shots of drivers helmets in focus (basic snap zooms with some motion). But to get it this exagerated it is pretty much impossible to have anything sharp (see shot details below - the car was moving at the time). The point was not to have it sharp like a normal snap zoom shot. You can't see it on this smaller version, but the image is "ghosted" (second curtain sync) and the drivers hands and helmet are in fact in focus behind/infront of the blurred image. The reason behind this shot was the try to get the 'flower' thing happening. A standard snap zoom doesn't really cut it for what I wanted - I needed a real slow shot to get the curves I wanted. :)

Hamster_Huey, will gladly give you the details of the shot. There are no secrets....

F/22, 1/10th of a second in TV mode, flash at +3 (no diffuser as I wanted highlights - you can see them represented as white streaks), second curtain sync, and a grad filter. Throw in a snap zoom, slight rotation of camera and some panning - and there you have it. A kind of tricky shot to get right, and I took a few to get the exact thing I was looking for. Slight adjustment of technique was required after each shot - adjusted until I got it pretty much right. Great fun to do - and a cool challenge.

Of course the shot style was aided by my long time favourite - the "parallax effect" (or "parallax shift" as some call it - take a look here for a post I did about that physics wonder -> https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=487139 )

Thanks Mark(e) - smarty pants.

Thanks a lot for the explanation Cliff. The link was also very useful. Unfortunately it is pretty hard to get so close to cars without press credentials. I will try to play around with this though.

I've seen loads of these kinds of shots recently. It's such a cool effect but I'm not sure about it here...maybe it's the framing...or those white sweeps?
