Thanks for the comments everyone.
Fut, I have many many shots of drivers helmets in focus (basic snap zooms with some motion). But to get it this exagerated it is pretty much impossible to have anything sharp (see shot details below - the car was moving at the time). The point was not to have it sharp like a normal snap zoom shot. You can't see it on this smaller version, but the image is "ghosted" (second curtain sync) and the drivers hands and helmet are in fact in focus behind/infront of the blurred image. The reason behind this shot was the try to get the 'flower' thing happening. A standard snap zoom doesn't really cut it for what I wanted - I needed a real slow shot to get the curves I wanted.
Hamster_Huey, will gladly give you the details of the shot. There are no secrets....
F/22, 1/10th of a second in TV mode, flash at +3 (no diffuser as I wanted highlights - you can see them represented as white streaks), second curtain sync, and a grad filter. Throw in a snap zoom, slight rotation of camera and some panning - and there you have it. A kind of tricky shot to get right, and I took a few to get the exact thing I was looking for. Slight adjustment of technique was required after each shot - adjusted until I got it pretty much right. Great fun to do - and a cool challenge.
Of course the shot style was aided by my long time favourite - the "parallax effect" (or "parallax shift" as some call it - take a look here for a post I did about that physics wonder -> https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=487139 )
Thanks Mark(e) - smarty pants.
