Could you imagine what it would be like if they both used the same mount? Imagine a Nikon body with a mix of Nikon and Canon lenses.

Best of both worlds.

Wow!

you can put a Nikkor on a Canon, autofocus and all, if you just buy an adapter...

Er..you lose AF and automatic diaphragm..But you can

That has to do with the low mount to film plane distance of the EOS system, meaning its essentially a matter of spacing the lens from the film plane enough so it focuses properly, which means that Canon is probubly one of the most versatile cameras on the market when it comes to lens choice..

what other restrictions will one encounter by using nikon lens on a canon body? Is there a loss of a stop, like with a converter? Loss of AF? What other problems will occur?

Basically, No AF and no automatic diaphragm, meaning that the aperture you set on the aperture ring is what you see, its like running around with your DOF preview button held down [That can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on subject]

Most people thus, buy and convert the old MF Nikkors to Canon mount, because theres a LOT of them in the used marketplace at cut prices, And they're optically pretty darn good, even for 30 year old lenses!

And if you're really picky, you can even get new Ai-S Nikkors...

Some lenses like the 50mm f/1.2 Ai-S are pretty highly regarded [Its not as good as the Canon, but you can get one for $450-500 versus $1300] and if you don't mind MF, then you can get 300 f/2.8s and etc for a FRACTION of what an AF will cost..

With a Nikon lens on a Canon body you lose autofocus and IS (or VR in Nikon lingo). It's just a very thin adapter ring. No light loss, etc. The cheap ones don't have electronics and the Canon can't give the metering info (you have to use Manual mode). The slightly more expensive ones have a little chip that fools the Canon into thinking there's a Canon lens attached, and it will thus provide metering. You basically can use that kind in Av or Manual mode, and IIRC certain metering modes work much better than others. I believe both kinds of rings will give a focus confirmation when the lens is focused correctly on the subject. Worst case is that the chip breaks off when you're using it or the entire ring breaks. Hasn't happened to me yet, but that was the worst horror story I found when doing research. Look on eBay for "Nikon EOS adapter". Do a Google search for more info, there's tons of it out there.

Yeh, thats the ticket. We would be eating right out of Canon's hands with no competion to improve their cameras and drive the price down. Good idea.

No you still get metering, just very simplistic metering

Take your lens off and notice it still meters :3

The biggest thing the little chip provides is focus confirmation

I'm guessing "but" should be "buy", and that's the right idea.

The biggest thing the little chip provides is AF confirm

There is no AF. The chip provide confirmation that things are in focus, but you must manually focus the lens. There is nothing auto with the focus.

I know that, I meant Focus confirmation..

It just lights up the light and beeps when its in focus according to the AF points
