Yes, I did the mod already. They will fire from far away with 2 to 3 walls. However, two of the recievers were just not doing the job consistantly.

Are these the ones from Gadget Infinity (cactus)? If so I agree that they don't work that great. I picked up another kind, also from ebay, from Phottix (strato c6). It's both a flash trigger and shutter release. So far from my testing it has worked flawlessly and is much better built.

Yeah, I have a set of ebay triggers collecting dust somewhere. I was getting way to aggravated with them not working most of the shots that I got me some Pocket wizards a few weeks ago. I didn't get to do a shoot with them yet, but I'm sure all will go well now.

Apparently, I got a set made on a Wednesday, as we say around here. My eBay trigger has worked quite reliably as long as I am close enough and it has good battery power. I have not modded mine to get more range. I do sometimes plug the receiver into an extension cord and bring it closer to me. I use mine primarily outdoors at a race track. This should be about as challenging as an environment gets. Please also note, mine are not a Cactus-style trigger. It also uses a U.S. legal frequency.

I hate to reiterate ... but the cybersyncs are going to be the way to go for most shooters. I've had mine since they came out and have yet to have a misfire. They have incredible range and are a great value.
