Jobo Photo GPS

Hi folks,

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Jobo Photo GPS? I'm looking for an on-camera (1d mk3) solution for geo-tagging and haven't come across many options. I have a couple of concerns about this one.

1. Is there anyway to dump the locations it's recorded onto a backup drive or something similar? I'm going to be away for a month and wasn't planning on bringing a laptop, nor will I likely have access to one. I was hoping to bring a portable storage solution of some sort and was wondering if there was a way to just copy the stored information across to a plain drive?

2. Is there any way to recharge it without having access to a computer? It states it's charged by a USB connection, but doesn't show the actual port in any photos I've seen. I have a few power adapters for other USB devices that charge just fine. It may not be an issue as they claim the battery has a typical life span of a couple of months.

If there are any other on-camera options (I don't want a dedicated GPS unit or anything like that) I'd love to hear about them.

It can tag your photo's on the go by inputting the memory card. I don't know if it can do RAW, I didn't check, but you can see if it would fit what you are looking for.

Thanks Sean, that's actually a really cool way of doing it! The only downside I can see from that one is that it only records the data to jpeg images and I do shoot raw. Also, doesn't seem to support SDHC cards which I do have quite a few of.

It did take a while to find a retailer for it as well

Tell me about it. I know I've seen something similar for Canon in the past, but I just can't seem to find it for the life of me now.

Still have a few months before the trip so hopefully I'll find something suitable by then.

Here's a really expensive solution:

The WFT-E2 wireless transmitter has a built in USB port than can be used to connect to a GPS device that records the data directly onto the EXIF of the image when you take a shot.

So I would need to buy it as well as a dedicated GPS device. Sweet! Where did I leave that £1000 lying around??

I think that option is out, but mainly because I don't want to have to lug all that extra kit around. Though I will be in Tibet for most of it, maybe I can just hire a sherpa?

what about a Netbook. Really small notebook computer and a stand along GPS. You would be looking at around 400 ish I think, as you don't need anything too crazy to handle the photo's, just enough to sync the photo's on the card.

Just a thought.

Yea, I'd thought of that too as the netbook could serve as a dumping platform for my photos as well. Power is my biggest issue there, but I wouldn't need to use it every day so it might be ok.

I use the Merax Photofinder with RAW software. It is a small GPS receiver, you sync time between it and the camera, have it turned on for the day and it will record your track.

When downloaded to the software, it matches the time of shot to a location.

Works for both jpeg and RAW.

I've started to use Lightroom with Jeffrey's GPS plugin. Works great on my RAW's. I take my DLP 700 and download the track and export it to GPX, then use it in Lightroom. Get's around the whole RAW issues.

Why an on camera solution? For the size and cosy of the Jobo unit you can get one of various GPS units that will clip on a bag or belt, that can run all day, and need not depend on the camera. So long as you can read a track file from the GPS unit you can then use various software to sync and add GPS info to your RAW files. Id especially not want a hot shoe device, as my strobist mentality makes me want to leave the hotshoe open in case I want to attach my wireless transmitter or a flash.

Now a GPS + PSD unit, that would be interesting if the PSD could keep signal while inside my bag... And some software to autotag... Dont stop me here, Im dreaming!

One fundamental advantage of the Jobo is the fact that it only records positions when you press the shutter button...it does not have hundreds of thousands of extraneous positions in a log file which rely upon synchronization of the camera time and GPS time in order to pair the position to the photo.

The downside is the need to mount the Jobo in the hot shoe (or, I presume it has a capability to be tethered to a camera with a PC cord, which itself is bothersome).
