I can feel it tugging on my wallet right now!

That makes 2 of us! With such center sharpness and vivid color, I'm gonna have to get my wallet out and start buying some better lens caps!!

Hey, can somebody enlighten me on the duck story? Is it for real? Just another newcomer here... :) Can't wait to get home and shoot my lens cap! Cannot decide if I am going with a CP or UV filter... maybe I'll try both!

They didn't show up as a dark spot next to a bright spot in the image... ala 5d Mark II did they?? Gonna need to get a lens cap/firmware update ASAP!!

Hey, it looks like my lens cap is producing fuzzy-looking hot pixels. What's the best way to calibrate it? Anyone know what Canon charges for that? I've had it a while and it may no longer be in warranty...

I will say this about it, though: the bokeh is fantastic. :-D

I sent my lens cap in for repairs at Canon (twice). The last time it came back, the service note said they calibrated the White Balance. It was off by 4% but within specs.

Fantasic bokeh is inherent to ALL Canon lens caps from what I've read. It's the color, contrast, and sharpness that are the main issues. Sigma lens caps have a severe front focus issue, for what it's worth. Be careful that you don't accidentally put a font focusing Sigma lens cap on a Canon lens and ruin a perfectly good focusing lens. My 24-105 f/4 produces absolutely horrific contrast and color with a Canon brand lens cap on it. Hard to say what the Sigma cap does due to the focus issues. ;);)

Actually, that is only if you happen to get a perfectly round lens cap. If you get one of the more common, slightly asymmetrical lens caps, you will find that the bokeh is not quite so "fantastic." The irregularities in the lens cap shape are magnified in the image, especially if you make larger prints. Just thought that needed to be clarified. Otherwise your post is spot (so to speak) on!

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the simple, yet exquisite and powerful method of bringing out lens cap beauty:

100 mm macro with 12,24,36 stacked tubes then stacked 1.4x & 2x TCs: awesome detail -- you should be able to capture the eyeballs of the neutrons!

Tony,

I never thought of that. Is this theoretical, or have you tried it? If possible, could you post a picture of the resulting photo? It could really help a lot of us newbies here who are anxious to learn from others with more experience! Thanks!
