How do you do this test using the green box setting? Please help an "expert" photographer out. This looks to be a VERY important test to add to my testing- you know, to test my cameras...

I hate to say it, but I am one of the guilty ones for clicking on that wonderfully crisp black photo just to see if there were any hot pixels! ROFL

Do you get that by sharing lens?

(sorry == lenses. That's what happens when you practice unsafe spelling.)

Always practice safe swapping...the risk is real, I'm proof. HAHAHA

Have you tried using manual? :innocent look and whistles: ;)

Manual?!? I pay hundreds of pounds for a camera that has more processing power than my first 3 PC's combined, and then have to over expose it myself?!? Pffft.......!!

This is all well and good, but I think that it is virtually impossible to tell much from the photos that have been posted here. With the aggressive AA filters on Canon cameras, you should use Glenn Mitchell's multipass sharpening routine on these before asking us to judge them. Just be sure to use the settings for web images, and not those for offset printers (although a nice 11X14 offset print of some of these would make a nice gift).

For a hand-held meter, you can "rubber band" things by going into a completely dark room for your reading.

To ensure that all qixels are properly in focus, make sure that you use the narrowest apeture your lens affords -- f/22, f/32, whatever. On the downside, you may see some diffraction, but the upshot of that is the hot pixels should spread out a bit and so be more visible.

I'd like to see the guys who proclaim film to be better now! I've never seen ANY of them produce a shot showing hot pixels like these. It's obvious digital is far far better for this... ;)

cheers

I have done a careful comparison of taking pictures with the lens cap on with the 300D, the 450D, the 5D, and my point-and-shoot and (a) even though I used a different lens cap on each one; (b) it was rainy, cloudy, snowy, and sunny on the days I tested each camera (respectively); and (c) I set the exposures differently for each camera---I still think my scientific comparison is valid and, well, I hate to tell you guys but---the evidence clearly shows that the point-and-shoot is a FAR superior camera and gee whiz it is cheaper too. . .

What he means is that he gets many more bright and colorful spots from the point and shoot, creating a good astrophotography shot -- quite an achievement!
