Head for Bogen 682b free standing monopod

Hello all, what could you recommend for me to purchase for use with a 40D and medium size lens to mount on the Bogen 682b Monopod?

There's no such thing as a "free-standing monopod" if you mount ANYTHING on it. The little legs are for one thing only - adding a little stability while you hold the monopod vertically. On second thought, I suppose that the legs MIGHT hold a fully extended monopod vertical while you reach for the camera to mount on it - assuming there's no wind.

Actually, most monopod users that I know of think the little legs are a very silly idea. Those who have them don't use them.

I use a Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head on my 680B monopod. That's because I use the monopod at all sorts of angles other than just standing vertically behind a vertical monopod. The ball head gives me the versatility that I need.

The relative merit of the various choices for a monopod head really depend on how the owner intends to use the monopod. If you can fill us in a bit better, then we can possibly suggest a solution for you.
