Well I'm ready to upgrade my body and with my current lens line up, its obviously got to be another Canon. I'd really love a 5D mk2 and could probably save enough to afford one but I'm a hobby photographer and I think the 5D mk2 would be too much camera for my needs. I'd settle for an original 5D but they are getting harder to find and the prices here in the UK are still quite high.

Now we come to the 40D and 50D. The 40D is nice enough but I'd like something with 12MP because a lot of Stock Libraries insist on 12MP as a minimum. The 50D has some great features that I'd love, especially the LCD and the microfocus adjustment but the high ISO issues are putting me off.

So now to the question:- When can we expect the 60D? I know that the 50D hasn't been out all that long but does anyone think that Canon might roll out the 60D sooner than originally planned because the 50D hasn't been a resounding success? Also, do you think Canon will have the balls to drop the megapixel count on the 60D to something more reasonable to achieve good IQ and high ISO performance.

This is a genuine question and its not my intention to criticise the 40D and 50D (or their owners)

Haha.. doesn't Canon have the 18 month time period between xxD bodies or something?
I'm guessing somewhere around August-October. Don't quote me on that

You'll never see them going backwards in the MP count. I think the 60D will (hopefully) use a more refined 15mp sensor to achieve lower noise than the 50D currently has but they'll never go the other way. That would be like admitting they screwed up and surrendering.

With this economy, there's little chance that they'd speed up the release cycle. At best, you can hope that they moved it from a 18-month (previous cycle) to the new 12-month (40d-50d interval). If such is the case, the earliest you can expect something would be end of summer.

In other words. Don't hold your breath. Get the 50D now and noise ninja the noise.

People are blowing the noise thing way out of proportion imo. I'd go for the 50D.

Even the 40D has pretty good noise control - better than most cameras out there. It's more important to get good exposure anyhow.

I agree
I think the noise thing is a byproduct of over hipped expectations from a new model.
The 50D is a great camera

The 50D is a great camera; the issue seems to be whether it is so much greater than the 40D that it justifies the price differential.

Not happy to hear about having chipped batteries in the 60D/7D. Come on, Canon, give us a little credit here.

Just wondering, the 40D would most likely be discontinued by then correct?

I think the people over at the rumor mills have to stop sniffin' payote and just get outside more. If you believe that Canon has moved to a 12-month product cycle for DSLR's of ANY CLASS, you're nuts. The early release of the 50D doesn't "cement" anything (to ridicule canonrumours choice of words). Also, given the state of the world economy, they will likely leave the 50D on the shelves LONGER than 18-months, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 60D only show up at Photokina 2010. The economy is bad, everywhere, people are not spending on big ticket items... all of 2009 will be bad, most of 2010 also by all accounts. Any release slated for the next 12 months is gonna get pushed back to a date that it has a chance at actually putting up some numbers.

Seriously, if you think the Canon 50D, Canon Rebel XSi and Nikon D90 sales figures are bad, realize that if they had been released now (February 2009), they would be worse by 50%. It seems the only segments of the camera market less affected by the slowdown are (not surprisingly) the professional market... the 5D mk2's and the D700's are still hot items - because Pro's pay for their tools to make a living. The enthusiast photog has to consider other bills before the hobby. Hence slow sales in the 50D, XSi, and D90s. There is also the factor of market saturation - people are still happy with their 40D's of a year back and 20D/30D's of the last 5 years. Canon knows that if it bombards the DSLR market with product in rapid-fire fashion (i.e. 12-month cycles) they will get ever-diminishing sales figures. Its not the same as in the P&S market where you can buy a camera for $150 today, and in 6 months replace it with another $150 model which is much better.

The 50D is a great camera, go get it now, don't wait for a 60D that is going to rolling out half-way thru the Obama fallacy, I mean presidency.

Not for another year atleast.

Nope.

What do you mean 'good IQ and high ISO performance'? The 50D already has it. Many people who don't own the camera are getting so bogged down by the high-ISO noise reports that they've almost forgotten the all-important point: The 50D is still a great camera. It takes great pictures under the right hands and the high-ISO performance is nothing bad. I've posted countless photos from the camera being used "in the real-world" and I've been extremely happy with it. Buy it and be happy. Don't nitpick about technical facts which are so insignificant compared to the photographer's ability.

Just add a 70-200 f4 L IS ( or 2.8 if you 'really' want to ) to that glass you have there & sit on your hands on money and get yourself the 7D in the fall or Christmas time when 'sales' hit & you'll be happy.

Till' then get out there and shoot with what you have ;) You've got some great shots in that gallery of yours :)
