Here they are. The labrador is nearly 12, and the golden retriever has just turned 2 years old. Winter is getting harder for the old lady, but she still enjoys the snow. As for the golden retriever, she just enjoys life in general!

The old gal is just the most terrific dog. I found her in a shelter 11 years ago and she's been my constant companion ever since. I hate it that she's getting old. Whoever it was who said "A dog's life is very short - it's their only fault, really" hit the nail on the head.

And it's still a mystery to me why somebody would have sent such an awesome animal to a shelter. Humans can be so weird sometimes.

my dog Lucy will be 12 this december. she was dumped at the pound with five puppies. she was afraid of the world and was marked as a fear biter, which is an instant death sentence in the pound.

luckily an animal rescue group rescued Lucy and her pups. Lucy also raised two chow pups at her foster home, and she stayed at the foster home for months because she was difficult to place. she had even been returned twice.

best dog ever and my constant companion ... and yeah it kills me that she is getting old.

Lucy is beautiful. There's something majestic about old dogs, but it's hard to capture in a photo. You've managed it, though!

I volunteered at our inner city SPCA shelter for many years, when we lived downtown, and my favourite placements were those where we found a "forever" home for a dog that had bounced back or been difficult to place. One of my favourites was a young dalmatian who'd come back twice and was up for euthanasia - "unmanageable" was the reason. In came a couple of guys looking for a dog, and one of them immediately burst into tears when he saw this dog, because it was so beautiful. They lived in a high-rise and I wouldn't normally have placed a dalmatian in that kind of home, but I had a good feeling about this one and let them take him. I ran across them by chance in a dog park a couple of years later; they'd actually moved house so the dog would have a back yard and a park close by. He looked so happy.

My Cannelle was given up because she was "too difficult to train". Ha! We did a lot of stuff together over the years (obedience, flyball, rally), but the thing we both enjoyed most was agility. In 2008, her last year of agility competition, she ranked third in Quebec and 12th in Canada in her class, and was only the second labrador in Quebec ever to achieve her Agility Champion of Canada title. Just goes to show. We've quit competing now, but she still comes to training class and has a blast. Keeps her young.
