i think people are distracting from the fact that this is another security breach for the mac. yeah okay, its because of illegal software and yeah okay again its not the OS but a vunerability by a 3rd party package but again thats not really the issue.

the OS is becoming more and more popluar and more of these threats will emerge, it doesn't really matter what the method of infection is.

I agree they will become more prevalent as there are more switchers.

But if you have to type in your administrator password to confirm that you want to install and run downloaded, pirated software, then I can't put any blame on Apple. I'd say the same for Vista/MS if the user willingly downloads and installs illegally obtained material that they know is from an untrustworthy source.

Sure the method of attack matters. Trojans are nowhere near as bad a viruses, to the general community. To the person attacked, they are the same. Knowing how trojans are spread is very important in their defense. Knowing the source of the software you choose to install is very important in defending against them.

Yes, Macs will have more and more of these. No one debates that. Still yet to be a mac virus, and its unlikely we'll see one anytime soon. Though nothing is impossible.

I am also old enough to remember when people used to say the same thing about any computer system.

Hoff, I'll trade you Bubble Bobble for Apache Strike, and my mother wants to know if you have Lotus123

Have you Calibrated your Monkey lately?

Now more than ever we need to be a community, working together and for each other, as photographers, as lovers of photography and as members of POTN.

Dude, my brother in law is making custom dongles for the latest Autocad Rev; $10 in ratshack parts and he'll make you one, too.

Ah, dongles. Yea, glad they didn't survive.

I started on a TRS-80, played with timex sinclair, c64, and Apple II's. I have still never seen or had a virus, therefore they don't exist! :)

All ESKO Artwork software still requires dongles. My Mac at work has a pair of them, one for Artpro and one for BoostX.

Just want to chime in after reading all these posts:
I am a student and you can get the new CS for less than 200 bucks US.
Adobe screwed my school into buying CS3 when they could finally afford it for tens of thousands of dollars before they prematurely realesed CS4. Pretty lame.
They are a business, you cant blame them.
People, free software on college campuses is like a slice of pizza.
Morality is not gonna buy you any beer.
Hating on people has never solved a problem.
This trojan wont either.

You're probably correct about Adobe gaining market share do to the thieves, but I don't think they support it. If Adobe really wanted to get into Colleges, wouldn't it be better for them, and the students, if they offered low-cost student pricing? Hell, put a 1 year expiration date, and give nearly free student versions. Seems a heck of a lot smarter than creating thieves to promote their product, doesn't it? Pretty simple idea too, so if Adobe felt it a good thing to give students copies, they'd do it, rather than any effort to thwart thieves.

Of course they don't support it, but they don't prevent it as aggressively as other companies. Microsoft is the same way with their OS and Office suite.

Colleges do offer the software at supreme discounts, but I'm talking about younger teens in high school. There are enough kids out there who download it and learn a lot even before they make it into those colleges with a graphical design emphasis.

The key is to lock people into your product so they never go anywhere else.

There are no other products comparable to adobe.
They need to get a ilock if they ever expect to make any money.
Digidesign does it and it works great.
