Actuations on 5D Mark II - How to check?

Was at an authorized dealer today (in Hong Kong) and was about to pull the trigger on a 5D MkII. They only had one body in the store and they 'claimed' it was just delivered from Canon.

As I always do, I tested it with my 24-70 and fired off 3-4 shots on my memory card. I immediately noticed the memory card door was creaking. Then I noticed that it already had screen protectors attached. The store claimed they 'put screen protectors on all the bodies we get'.

Anyway, I hesitated and bailed. Came home to check the images and the image filenames started with IMG_4269.

Im taking this to mean this body already has 4269 actuations? Can anyone confirm this?

The card as far as I remember, was freshly formatted. In any case, the last body I had used it on was on 6000+ actuations, so the 4269 doesn't make any sense.

Anyway tomorrow they are going to get one more body and have offered me that instead. I would like to check actuations in-store. Any idea how I may be able to do that?

Don't worry about image numbers... Some one else could have put their card in just before you and it could have picked up the file numbering from that card. If they let you shoot some samples, it's reasonable to think they also let others.

You can't tell from the Image, but if you had the camera with you... You could run the 40D Shutter Count program by Astrojargon. http://astrojargon.net/40DShutterCount.aspx (external link)

Take a laptop that has EOS Utility installed and copy the 40D Shutter program into the EOS Utility folder. Then connect the camera to the computer via USB and check it that way.

FAQ:

0) I have a 1D*/5D/10D/20D/30D/50D/300D/350D/400D/450D/1000D. Will the software work with it?
This works on any of the Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs except the 1D* series. This means it will work for the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, and the 1000D. I'm still not sure about the 5DMkII, as I'm getting conflicting reports. If you have one, please give it a shot and let me know. Thanks!

It will not work on the 1D*, 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D. It's not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them.

Yes it does. I've got a 5D Mark II :p and even helped David (the author of that program) figure out why it seemed to not be working. In all fairness, I haven't ran it since I upgraded to Firmware 1.0.7. Right now, I'm more interested in shooting than how many I've shot. Maybe 1.0.7 firmware broke it. I'll test it later this afternoon.

Ok... I stand corrected then. ;)

So can you help him make it work for my 1dmk3? lol...

Look at the news page on the astrojargon.net site. It's more recent that the download page. :)

Thanks to Justin Acuff and Robert Blum for helping run this down.
It turns out that 40DShutterCount *does* work on the new Canon 5DMkII. The only hitch is that the shutter count number won't increment while the camera is on.

For example: say you hook up your 5DMkII to your PC, run the utility, and get a count of 42.
You then take some shots while tethered, and then run the utility again, you'll still get a count of 42. You can unhook it, take even more shots, hook it back up, and the number will *still* be 42.
Now, turn the camera *off.* Turn it back on, run the utility, and you should get the correct number of shots.
Good news. Thanks again to Justin and Robert.

Sure, just send your 1DMkIII to me and I'll contact him to see if I can get it working. ;) Or if you can wait a few months, I plan to upgrade my 1D Mark II bodies to 1D Mark III bodies.

astro works perfectly with a 5D2. Be sure to follow the instructions CAREFULLY. If you don't, then it won't work.
