HI, ok I've gotten rid of quite few lenses and I've had my eye on a new lens for quite a while- just needed to raise a little liquid capital lol
Anyway I've always been torn between the 17-40 L and the 24-105 L IS
Now I'd like to get into Landscape photography but I also wanted a lens I can carry about and use for general purpose- the way I looked at it the 24-105 would be good for the latter, especially with IS but the 17-40 would be better for landscape- now I have a Sigma 10-20 so is the 24-105 the next 'logical' choice?
I'd also love a lens that can do some good actions shots, like mountain biking and car and buggy racing etc. And maybe some motocross if I'm lucky- oh and in the summer some horse shows.

Can anyone give me a definitive, 'obvious,' answer...I know this is an often asked question but you guys are the best to ask lol

Thanks for ANY help or opinions.

Richard

Well, I'd say 24-105 is the logical choice given you have a 10-20 already, but it's slower than the 17-40. Fast glass would help with motocross and such.

So, in essence, I've not helped you at all. :D

If I were in your shoes I'd got for the 24-105.

17-40mm, and 24-105mm are both f/4

for what you described wanting to shoot...i don't see how either of these will really help...i'd look into a longer zoom...maybe the 70-200f/4 (IS if you can afford it)...even that might not be long enough, but you do have a kenko 1.4...

Carry around, general purpose and action shots I think will require different lenses. I think the 24-105L will be great for your every day lens, but for action shot I agree the 70-200L would probably be better. The 24-105L will work for the action shots you describe, but the 70-200L will be better. I use the 24-105L whenever I'm out and want a lens that will be versatile and have good range, both wide and long.

I started with 10-22, 24-105, 70-200. Love 10-22 and 70-200 on my 40D, but the 24-105 is to narrow for me. Now I have the Tamron 17-50 and it fits perfect on my crop camera.

Before the Tamron I felt like I had to change lens all the time, either the 10-22 was to wide or the 24-105 to narrow. As a walk-a-round lens for a crop camera I would buy the 17-40 :)

But that's just me.

You're asking a lot of one lens. I think you need 2 , at least, to cover your needs. The 24-105 is a great all-around lens, and there are a few 'like new' for sale from people who got the 5D Mk II kit but didn't need the lens.

The Canon 85mm f/1.8 would be a nice, fast lens for action, if you can get close enough.

ok- yea I thought it might be tough to get ONE lens for all those needs... it's just I can't really afford two lenses right now...
Think I may end up going for the 24-105mm purely because I already have a 10-20 and it comes with IS... Thanks for all the help guys; will need to give this a bit more thought but the 24-105 might be the winner...

if you can afford the 24-105L IS...you can easily afford two lenses...you can get the 70-200 F/4 non is for about 500...and then pick up a 28-135IS for 250...
