Well, after a few years of CC points on my amex i decided to close my account. anyway, i have points to spend and i was thinking of buying my first digital camera with them. i have 110,000 points that i can use. i dont have any camera experience but i plan to learn quickly. if you go to shopamex.com and type in "digital camera" you can see what i can buy with 110,000 points. i dont have any money at the moment to use for accessories so i'd like it to be the most complete package possible. I was thinking a body with a lens kit??? Also, it doesn't have to be a canon!

Thanks!

I got no response from the shopamex.com server (other than a redirect that timed out), sorry.

as far as i can see the ONLY digital SLR (CANON) under 110000 pts is a rebel XS with 18-55 IS lens.

so id say get that.

The XSi is a great camera with a great kit lens (18-55 IS) but it is 129,976 Points.
Can you top it up somehow? https://www01.extra.americanexpress.com …=44304397&lid=fs_44304397 (external link)

I tried the link Super-Nicko posted too; same thing. It could be that my spam/ad/pop-up blocker clobbered the content.

Amex is telling me that the Canon XS is out of stock. That pretty much leaves you with the Nikon D60, for 109990 points, or the XSi for 129976 points (which means you'll have to chip in).

D60:

Wasn't showing anything when I tried that. Looks like the OP has three options. :)

I think in your situation I would go for the Canon G9.

Canon 50d+Grip, 40d+grip, 20d+grip, Nikon D300+grip, Canon MR-14EX TTL Ring Lite, Sigma EF-500 DG ST Flash, Canon EF 70-200mm F4.0 L USM, Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro lens, Canon 50mm f1.8 2 Niffty-Fifty, Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm, Tammy 28-75mm, Sigma 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 DC lens, Tokina 12-24mm f4, Canon 85mm f1.8, Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO HSM Macro, Manfrotto #3047 legs & head, Bogen/Manfrotto 676B Monopod, Canon Monopod 100, Slik Pro 340 DX Tripod and a bunch of NIKON stuff...

it all depends, i had the "gold card" which is $150 a year but they sent me a offer to wave the fee for a year. The offer was "spend $500 in 3 months for 50,000 points" so i bought my college books with it and bam got 50,000 points. Over the course of the year i'd charge expensive things like tuition and families airline tickets so points added up quickly. it's been a year so i cancelled the card and now i basically get $550 worth of free stuff which is pretty cool!

I am looking at all the camera suggestions you guys gave me. i will reply back with any questions i have later on tonight!

Edit: what are the main differences between the g9 and the xs style cameras?

thanks!!!!

The XTi kit was like.. 113,000 or so.. that wouldn't be much that you would be chipping in

g9 is top of the range point and shoot - like a compact (although quite large)

xs xsi xt xti 40d 50d 5d 1d - are all digital SLR's ... if you are not familiar with an SLR or know what one is i would recommend some serious research...

i missed that you said 'digital camera' not SLR - you posted in a place where people have camera kits worth anywhere from $500 - $50,000

So if you really can't kick in any money, then the XS with 18-55 IS is your best bet. It's a great camera. The Nikon D60 is a great camera too, but I think the Canon has it beat by a little.

Another option, which would be a cool setup for a broke kid is the E410 with the two lens kit. It is probably one of the lowest end SLR bodies, but comes with 2 great lenses:

https://www01.extra.americanexpress.com …=40834213&lid=fs_40834213 (external link)

You'd be giving up some high ISO performance vs the Canon/Nikon, but you aren't going to be able to get 2 decent lenses with any other kit. You'll even have 10k points left for a memory card.

The Canon G9/G10 are very high end point and shoots, but really can't compare with the IQ from an SLR. I'd say only go with that if you are big on portability over picture quality. It's still a powerful camera, just no SLR.
