Hello, i bought my camera for the main reason to take pictures of cars at events. (car shows, meets... whatever i have spare time for). i bought the 17-40L since thats the focal length i generally like to use the most. i have seen alot of people recommending a 70-200 f;4 L for daylight events. should i invest my money in one? since the price for a non-IS version is affordable for me. (i cant justify spending 1300+ on a lens that i use maybe once a month) im pretty sure i can do without the IS. since the pictures i take is for myself only.

Well, the 70-200mm f/4L (I recommend the IS version, I have it and love it and can go on and on about its greatness) is an awesome lens, but on a crop body for a car show/meet is gonna be very tight. The 17-40L is probably the right focal length giving you distortion free wide angle coverage allowing you to fit the entire rides into the frame while not having to step back so much as to hit the next car. If you want more reach to focus in on some details. A better fit would be the 24-105L. Realistically you'll end up using the lens around 50-80mm range and have the extra 25mm for really getting tight on headlamp assemblies and small details. Another way to go would be the EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, but I'd say you should get a zoom to cover the gap first and then add that.

I don't see much use for a 70-200 at car meets.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

yea, me neither. i was thinking i'd probably be using it at drift/drag events. if i find the time to attend. and also just use it as a general purpose lens for my zooming needs

the kind of shots i'm trying to learn are action shots such as this one, i know IS is kind of important for stuff like this..
