I usually congratulate fellow POTN members on their purchases, but I do not list my equipment in my signature because I feel strongly against gear snobbery..

What say you?

Meh, I can take it or leave it.

If you're extremely proud of what you have, show off!

But, in gear as in life, the second you feel superior, someone comes along who will leave you feeling woefully inadequate.

Hence, I merely link... ;)

Why should you be extremely proud of something that somebody else envisioned, projected and constructed?
You only paid money for it, right?
You may as well list your bank statement in your signature..

Just a discussion, nothing personal, of course..

How's it snobbery to have your gear listed? Unless you are trying to highlight it as your best quality and/or saying you're better because you have it I don't see it as snobbery. Having the right gear has landed me jobs, not having some gear has also lost me jobs.

I find the gear list very helpful like when some1 asking about upgrading/ect just to know where s/he is at.

Sorry I bothered to answer.

You obviously have an axe to grind on this subject.

Hmm..
Even if I agree with you, how much of that has to do with your signature in POTN forums?
How many jobs did you get from your participation in POTN?

What say you?

Strongly agree.

Now that being said, I do list gear and settings with photos I post - which I think is appropriate.

Besides, the Sig Line is the place for obscure song lyrics.

How can I prove you that I don’t? ;)

No need to be sorry, I asked a question, you answered it..
I thank you for that.

I think for most people, it just stops people from this forum from E-mailing/PMing you "what gear do you use?!" over and over. Plus if anyone somewhere else asks what gear I have, I just pop on the forum and copy and paste my sig to them.

I find gear links to be helpful. Then I can PM someone that I highly regard and ask their opinion on something instead of posting up yet another 24-70vs24-105 thread. ;)

I have actually been PM'd about things in my list on more than one occasion from people wanting to know how I feel on things. (suckers) ;)

Gear lists don't bother me at all. I don't really see alot of point to them... and yes, I have one too... but I think they're basically harmless. Sometimes, though, you can tell by a person's attitude that they're trying to impress others because they have "top notch" gear, but that's more of a vibe that comes out in posts and those people would be prone to brag about their gear whether they had an official list or not.

If anyone ever asks me what gear I have (never happened BTW), I just pop up the link to my gear list.
It’s pretty much up to date..

Please, don’t take me wrong, my gear is not a secret.
I just don’t feel that I have to push it under anybody’s nose..

It makes me no dif if someone lists or not. I choose not to because I feel that photography equipment is just tools. Something to get what to me is really important; photographs.

There are a few gear lists that fit in well with your impression. The vast majority, to me, don't come across that way.

On the other hand, more than once I've been able to give someone a better answer to their question after reading their gear lists and seeing what gear they have available. More than once I've sought the opinion of folks who own a particular piece of gear. And more than once people have asked me questions about a specific piece of gear that they learned I owned from reading my gear list.
