I'd like to maybe light up some macro subjects using my 430EX otherwise its an off brand ring light/flash for $89
Have a 30D & didnt know if it can trigger my 430EX off the hot shoe without paying big $$ for accessories ST-E2 or OC-E3
After reading flash cord reviews cracking & dumping expensive flash units on the floor I'm not sure what to do.
The 430EX does have a little tab covering a 1/4" threaded metal piece that appears to be used to secure the side of the flash to a bracket.
UPDATE...are the radio/flash triggers safe or will they fry my pricey flash units electronics? Most photos I've looked at don't see, to have the same number of flash pins/contacts as canon.

You can't. You need the off shoe cord or the ST-E2 though I am sure there are other remote triggers that will work in place of the ST-E2

The metal mount on the side of the 430 is not 1/4-20, it's metric thread. Few options to get the 430 off the camera without the big bucks:
1) PC sync cord and hot shoe adapter, manually control the 430. about $20
2) eBay radio trigger, $20-30.
3) I would prefer the quality Canon cord and use ETTL for macro, but you can get a knock off cord from eBay, $26.
