I was looking at picking one of these beasts up later this week and was having a hunt around the internet, and found this review:-

http://www.michaelfurtman.com/sigma150_500.htm (external link)

I not that he states that he had MAJOR problems with the 40D (no other body) and the lens whilst in AI-SERVO mode and it reducing down to around 2 fps !

Has anybody bought one of these recently for use on a 40D and have they noticed this problem?

I only ask as I take a lot of Aircraft photography nearly always in AI-SERVO mode and I could do with the high FPS during landings.

Cheers for any info.

Tony

The lens had an issue with the 40D right after it was released, but Sigma has rectified that problem. I suspect this is what you're eluding to?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Yes that's what I was referring too, if they sorted the issue out, then I think I may be out of pocket by around £650 by the end of the week and having to find one hell of a Valentines gift for she who must be obeyed! ;)

Thanks for the info.

Ignore ed, he's on Canon's payroll.

Hmm, that has put the cat among the pigeons...I think a little more research on durability my be in order since my second choice was the 120-400.

I used to own the Bigma about 4 years ago and it was perfect before I won a 100-400L in a competition, I then ebay'd the Bigma.

The 100-400 had an accident around 6 months ago and is now in Canon heaven, and I have done without a good long focal length for a while but can;t stretch to buy a new 100-400L :-(

One of the things with the 120-400 or 150-500 is that they are NOT EX-series lenses sadly, which means they are NOT built as well as the 50-500 which is, they are actually replacing the 135-400 and the 170-500 in their lineup

I think thats sad given their pricetag, they should have the build of the EX series :/ But oh well

Owning two EX lenses and the bigmos I can tell you it is built absolutly as well as the EX series. I believe the only reason it is not an EX is because sigma changed their policy of what a lens needs to be to be called EX (all new EX lenses have to be fixed aperature... I think). In fact while the lens is not EX the case mine came in actually still had the EX lable on it.

Also, I have read the lens rentals report on this lens , while I can't explain this I can say it doesn't reflect my experience with the lens or from what I have seen, that of most other POTN members that own it.

I've used mine extensively for an African safari, deer and mountain goats in the Alps and for day time soccer games. In August I plan on upgrading my two EX lenses to their L equivalents. But right now I don't honestly see a reason to upgrade the bigmos to the 100-400L.

Maybe they've fixed the production line then

I was discouraged by the lensrentals report I'm afraid..Maybe they got a bad batch..I've personally had no issues with the 4 Sigmas I owned [Except for the 24-70 that I bought used and was just mistreated..wasnt their fault]

And I didn't know that about the build, thank you for clarifying me on that
