My opinion on the book:
For the "how did he setup the shot" it is great, for the "what settings did he use for that shot", I think you need his technical style to copy it. He does give f-stops, ISO, shutter speed, flash exposure etc but they are more of a guide IMO. By that, I mean when are you going to take that exact same shot in the exact same lighting situation.
He is an AV mode shooter using I-TTL (E-TTL) and IR triggers most of the time. He lets the camera do a lot of the work and dials in flash and exposure compensation where needed. Probably a good idea as it reduces thinking time and lets you capture a moment quickly without fumbling about,
For me, I think the value is in the "how did he setup the shot" as I have Skyports and so go manual, which he kind of lambasts
