I realize this is an unusual request, but figured this forum was the best place to ask about this subject.

I'm subscribed to a number of vBulletin-based boards. Of those, this is one of the few that seems to do "new thread activity" detection properly.

As I'm sure most of you have seen, vBulletin will appear to "remember" the last time you looked at a given thread and will show the thread title in bold with a "go to first new post" link next to it in the event that the thread has had any activity in it since you last viewed it.

The problem with the other vBulletin-based forums that POTN in particular does not seem to have is that those forums will "forget" about a lot of the threads in question and will either show them as having had no new activity at all or as having had activity that starts significantly later than the last time you actually viewed the thread (with the result being that the "first new post" link takes you to a message that is significantly later than the one it should have taken you to).

So my question is simple: what vBulletin configuration settings did you guys change to get POTN to behave properly for this? I'd like to give this information to the administrators of the other forums I'm a member of so that they can fix their installations.

Thanks!

It deals with the "Read Marking" settings

It can be found at - Vbulletin Options>General Settings> then either "Thread/Forum Read Marking Type" and or "Database Read Marking Limits"

Different settings can be very processor intensive and can slow the site down some. But, i do agree the way it is here is very usefull.

Thanks. I'm now viewing the vBulletin documentation.

Can one of you guys who administrates the forums tell me what the specific settings are for POTN? In particular, what "Thread/Forum Read Marking Type" is set to, and if it's either "Database (no automatic forum marking)" or "Database (no automatic forum marking)", then what "Database Read Marking Limit" is set to as well?

Thanks!

Thread/Forum Read Marking Type: Database (no automatic forum marking)
Database Read Marking Limit: 10

Marking limit may be changed over time as the threadread table grows really big - e.g. currently it's 1.1 million rows.

What settings we have here might not suit other servers, this server is scaled to work with current load easily.
