Today was to be a great day. I found out my work has a few canon 500mm f4 is lenses sitting around for use. Apparently I can check them out for work related use. How cool is that!
Well I took it out, and I took a few pictures to test it out before I was going to use it on the intended subject. Well in doing so, I saw this funky thing in the picture. Maybe it was a dirty lens, maybe it was a hair. I looked at the lens, nothin. I didn't think it was on the sensor cause i just cleaned it today. But I figured I'd check it out anyway. Low and behold this little funny lookin crack on the sensor. Well crap!
So now I gotta go send my camera in to canon to get a quote. I hope they dont want to charge me 2000 bucks to fix the sensor. I am not be a happy camper at all. Anyone else go through this? anyone know the costs? I did a search and couldn't find any definite answers. :(
On another note, I really really like this lens! It's sharp as all get out, autofocus is blazing fast. I kind of wish I never played with it cause now I want one. Or maybe the 300 2.8 cause it's more usable for track photography.

Here are some pics to drool/cry over

looks more like dust than a crack... anyways, sensor replacement might set you back a few bens...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yeah, that doesn't really look like a scratch to me. Looks more like a piece of fiber of a pec pad. Have you tried wet cleaning it again?

I saw this fighter fly by a ways away and took this shot. It shows there's something going way wrong.

Still looks like debris/dirt to me. Have you tried cleaning it again?

LifePixel charges $375 for scratched filter replacement (for 1D Mark II, prices vary by camera model). Remember there is a filter over your sensor, so if something is scratched, it's that filter.

as Rycam said, its the filter on top of the sensor that needs to be replaced. The part is around 200, plus 150 labor. so you are looking at 350 or so from canon

Rycam, I will be donating shortly, however, it will be through purchasing the neck strap. :)

When my 5D was new it leaked grease onto the sensor (filter). I spent over $100 on various cleaning solutions. It would be clean, then after a few shots, the spots would appear. Apparently there was a problem with too much lube on the mirror mechanism.

I finally sent it back to Canon and they did whatever they do in situations like that and the problem never came back.

That looked like a large splash of crap on your sensor. Do you think it came off the lens or ?
