I have to present a sports portfolio in a few days for my high school.

I have to have 10 images, no more or less (stupid rule i think)

Nice selection and good variety.

I'm divided on the lacrosse shot. Its a bit of an unflattering moment, and seems a bit static. She's got a very odd look on her face.

On the diving photo, I'd like to have seen this from a lower angle.

Soccer photo looks a little awkward with the ball floating there. I wish it had been timed a little better with the ball on the head.

I absolutely love that last football shot!

Very nice shots! Personally I would add two more action shots and get rid of the football team kneeling and girl basketball (solo). I also agree with the lacrosse player because you can tell its during warm ups.

The others show great action....a few of them look like they could use a run through with some noise reduction software.

1 - Good behind the glass shot, nice exposure, looks a little OOF
2 - Great shot
3 - Nice wide angle, uniforms a little over exposed, try bumping up the recovery slider in ACR
4 - Good action and composition
5 - Not a fan, looks like a spoof that actually ended up working, if the goal wasn't covering her left arm it would look better
6 - good action, i wouldn't put it in because the composition is a little awkward
7 - good shot, i would crop it in a little big more, as it is right now i wouldn't include it.
8 - good action. looks a little OOF and with the legs cut off it looks weird. i would crop in to the waist
9 - good shot, needs to be a touch brighter
10 - Great shot - again just crop it in a little bit.

Over all you have a good portfolio put together. The only real complaint I have about your portfolio is work on the cropping and composition.

It actually was during the game...I was 10 minutes late, but I can see where you might have gotten that idea.

Here is my break down...

First, I agree with a lot of what you all said, so note that....but I do have some method to my madness.

1-This is a keeper. I was only allowed to do this two times and the second time the camera stopped shooting in burst. #1, our star player, was having a down night. He usually dunks and I could tell he wanted to do it, but never got the chance (on this basket, he did it on the other during the first half, my luck). I am pushing to let me hook it up again, but my athletic director can be tough.

2-Yes the angle is something every swimming photographer gets, but the colors are what make this one special to me. It's not clear why they are wearing pink in the photo, but it's for a breast cancer swim meet the girls s/d team does every year.

3-I may try and crop this in a little more. This is framed and hanging in PE office at my school and it looks amazing printed, but I can't reproduce that feeling for some reason digitally here. I will have to work on this one.

4- Keeper as well. It should be noted that the pool at my HS is basically a cave. There is NO light. So at 6400ISO and some serious trial and error, I was floored when i got home and imported this baby. The action is the other part of this I love. The blue capped kid is clearly struggling and the entire picture tells a story.

5-I agree, this is not a strong image. I have another lacrosse photo that may be a better picture that I will replace this with. This photo was originally a landscape and this crop was a suggestion from a fellow photographer.

6-Peak action again. Matt Jones is a beast. I don't necessarily agree with the comment on cropping but I will see if I can get a different perspective. What about the cropping don't you like?

7-I can see where someone might be on the boarder about this one, but I think the diver looking backwards makes you feel like he is thinking in his head and really focusing on the shot. Again, this was taken in the cave.

8-The crop is weird. I am going to bring it up to the waist at least. But, this is pretty peak action.

9-WEAK, nuff said.

10-I love this one. This was the shot where I threw myself out on the field and was like "click click click click" then I looked at the LCD and was like holy $h!%. I think I actually have a better version were his face is lighter.

I will post another reply when I make some changes. Thanks for the feedback.

I don't have much to offer that has not already been covered. The only thing I would add is make your first photo the best photo of the bunch, which to me is the #10, the football shot.

My critique.

1- Seems OOF. Also remote shots like this are mostly done for dunking. Its a different capture but not something that is rare. Don't really like it.

2- Nice capture, once again nothing great.

3- Liking this one but crop out the extra space on the right.

4- Nice, but it seems a little dark in his face.

5-It really looks like it was during practice. Doesn't matter if it was during the game, it looks like practice.

6- Not really working. Crop to them fighting over the ball or don't use it. The wide view doesn't work.

7- BACKGROUNDS, BACKGROUNDS, BACKGROUNDS!!!!

8- Crop. Also seems a little OOF.

9- Her face is very odd. Also overall the photo seems very odd.

10- Nice capture. Crop it tighter.

If you are a high schooler than these shots are great. My personal opinion is that #3 and a tighter crop on #10 are great. The rest are nothing special. The angle of #1 makes it interesting, but the action itself isn't.

Limiting yourself to 10 pictures isnt stupid. It forces you to really look at your work and evaluate what is good and whats not.

That being said, do you really feel these are the 10 best images youve ever taken?

First, the pictures that need to go are the diving one and the girls backetball.

To stuff about needed to be peak action.... that is a load of crap. A shot from a warm up is fine depending on the usage. The vast majority of shots published are not peak action shots. A standout feature sports shot counts just as much as a peak action shot.

To the lacrosse shot, it actually isn't that bad. For It is ideal for new print in the crop it is now, it would fit a column wide just fine, if you needed a feature shot of her. Is it portfolio worthy, probably not. What it did show is you understood the shooting angles for the sport though. Not a bad start at all.
