My normal camera is the 40D. I use the xti still for product photography. Is it worth having a small point and shoot as well? -- for those times when I don't have the larger rig or can't bring the larger rig (space, fear of destruction, aliens attacking, etc.) or will I be constantly wishing I had the exact configuration of my other rig when I take a shot? maybe I should resign myself to taking more risk and carrying around a lot of stuff all the time, instead of a lot fo the time.

by way of explanation, I got a gift certificate.

Canon 7D, 40D w/kit 28-135, Canon 24-105 f4L IS USM, Canon 70-200 f4L IS USM, Canon 17-55 f2.8 USM IS, Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO, Canon 50 f1.4, Canon 60mm Macro, 580EXII, MR 14-EX, PS CS4

I have a P&S as well in my bag, but I mostly use it when I go out (bars and such), fits in my pocket. Also works good for half way decent video in a pinch!

I love my little P&S camera. I've actually gotten some of my best shots with it. I've actually upgraded as of today to a Panasonic Lumix FS3. Fantastic little camera. Has a few things that irk me a bit, but by playing around with it you can adjust it to whatever you prefer. I had been using a Sony DMC W55 for the last couple of years. It was my first digital camera that I ever bought (or owned!). I had a Canon 300D for almost a year, but it was stolen at the airport on my way from Canada to Australia. I also use a Yashica 35mm (my brain's tired and I can't think of the model number at the moment :( It's from the 70's though, an FR something) when I feel the need for that total control.

All in all, it's quite handy to have a compact cam that you can just slip in your bag and take everywhere with you, for those random situations you wouldn't necessarily expect to be taking photos. :)

Just because you can operate a camera, doesn't necessarily make you a photographer. Having a great eye for art is sometimes more important than having top-notch equipment. :)

I hate P&S cameras and I'd rather not waste money on them. I'd take the risk of carrying my heavier DSLR but not having to deal with weird/noisy/ugly colored pictures taken with my P&S.
Maybe I'm just a bad photographer, but I don't care. The pictures I take with my DSLR are a hundred times better than the ones taken with the P&S. I only use it when I go out with my friends to take snapshots of us. No artistic use.

I ended up ordering a lens for my 40D after all. The 60mm USM macro. I probably will pick up a P&S someday though, maybe for just going out purposes or times when it;s physically impossible to take the bigger rig.
