Compact Gitzo Tripod for M10 + 1D + ...?

I have a Marking M10 and have been using it on my G2220EX tripod, but I want something lighter and a bit more compact and will hold a 1D + 70-200/2.8IS or 1D + 100-400IS with no issue. I really don't anticipate acquiring any longer/bigger lenses, but you never know. For simplicity sake, let's say I add the 1.4x TC onto those combinations.

I'd like my setup to be under 5 lbs. if possible. I doubt throwing on the M10 on the Gitzo traveler would make sense, but do you guys have any idea on which Gitzo would fit what I'm looking for?

You're going counter to the conventional recommendation in attempts to use 400mm lens with the combo you are looking for.

That's what I though, which was why I wanted to see if anyone on this site has found something like what I'm looking for. I know it big lenses and portability don't usually go hand in hand, but I was hoping to keep additional weight down on my backpack for hikes and snowboarding.

I don't think it is a matter of not finding the right model; you can't fight the basic laws of vibrations vs. focal lengths.

Since the EX model is aluminum, you'll obviously save weight by going CF. My Gitzo 3541LS (folds shorter than the 2541) and Markins M-10 is 5.7 pounds, for reference.

2 series would (just) work for a 100-400 IMO. (with good technique and circumstances).
Forget about adding a 1.4 TC however.

I agree. I'm using a 2530 with the M10. I would not recommend going over 300mm on a regular bases. However with good long lens technique, I feel I am able to use the setup when I use my 300 + 1.4TC. If you use a 400+ focal length on a frequent basis, then I would recommend a 3 series Gitzo and an M20. If longer, then you would probably consider a gimbal on the 3 series.

Ok, considering I would probably use the tripod more like a monopod in those long focal length situations I may end up goin with the 2530 or 2540 (or whatever equiv Gitzo has out now). Might go with the 4 section legs for compactness. I wish we had a Gitzo dealer nearby where I could check out the legs. Eventually, I might upgrade to a two tripod system. Get the Gitzo travel and Q3T, and grab a 3 series with an M20. For now, I'll compromise.

Look closely at the specs of the 3541LS and the 2541... you'll see very little where the 2-series is the better choice, I think. 3541LS has it beat in capacity AND folding length (it is smaller)... just a bit heavier. I was set on the 2541 until I compared them closely. Then you wouldn't have to re-sell in the future.

With the 3 series tripod, will my M10 ballhead be enough? I'm thinking it's more than enough.

It is. It doesn't match at the base as the M20 is the intended head for 3-series but it works perfectly well. I have the 3540LS and the M10
