After getting the 1D Mark II N, I want to change the LEDs on the top of my 5D to match :) has anyone ever done this before, and if so, how hard is it to get to the LCD, and what size LEDs does it use? I'm assuming it uses standard SMD 0603 LEDs...

I took apart my 30D to fix the firm shutter button a few weeks ago, but my pictures on the process aren't much help. I'll likely be popping open a 40D this weekend, I'll try and check out the Led situation.

This is my camera (it may be of some help):

So how hard is it to get the top cover off - do I have to disassemble a lot to get to it?

If you could check out the LCD situation that'd be great smacafee - take detailed photos of the LCD and how the LEDs mount, if you could too please, and if you are feeling really adventurous, you could run the lit LCD (LED on) through a multimeter and see what sort of voltages it's being fed ;)

thanks!

Claz, as you can see in his pictures, you have to take most of the outer shell off. The only thing that I hate about this is you have to peel the grip off to get to the screws... just have some ultrathin double-stick tape ready for putting it back on.

To get the shell off there's probably about 30 screws I think. All pretty straightforward until you get to the back - need to remember to unhook the ribbon cable for the dial before you yank it off - and the top which has a load of wires and ribbon cables that can get caught on various pokey bits. Top can be a little fiddly to get back on too. Need to be careful not to pinch the loose wires.

In the photos, the bit you want is still screwed to the top cover.

Yes, sadly not velcro rip-apart disassembly like you're used to :p

I used to do phone modifications and repairs... six screws, and everything is sandwiched together. :p

LOL. I do have pics! ...somewhere

But the 30D came from Clarence so he'll verify that it worked after I turned it inside out :)
