For Christmas I got a Bushnell 78-9519 so I searched around and got these from B&H to go with my XS:

They finally arrived yesterday and the skies cleared up tonight. It is damn cold out so I didn't play around for too long before coming back in. Managed to get this one using prime focus (I think that's what its called, haven't played with using an eyepiece in there yet):

Focus was still a little off. I need to get an angle view finder because I was pretty much laying on the ground below the scope for this. Using the angle piece for the scope itself would not allow me to get proper focus.

For comparison, this is a shot I took just before the one above using my 55-250mm IS (my longest lens). Neither are cropped.

I can't wait to play around some more!

Excellent, glad to see you got those adapters and are starting to play around with some moon shots. Focus is only perhaps a tiny bit off in the first shot, but everything else looks great. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with eyepiece projection shots next.

Congrats,

I was also out lastnight and had the same softness issue :D Did you let your scope cool down? aparently that seemed to be an issue that i will correct next time.

Amazing how fast the moon moves through the view finder, What mount are you using?

here was my shot from lastnight same thing prime focus no cropping

I did not let my scope cool down, so that might have been part of it. Mine has a manual EQ mount, but I didn't take the time to set it up correctly, just got the moon in frame and started shooting. Looks like yours is a bit longer reach than mine, mine is 900mm. Once I got it centered It stayed in frame for a good while. I got off 7 or 8 shots without adjusting.

As for your "upside down" moon...beats me...lol. Could have to do with the type of scope. Are you using a reflector or refractor?

Mine is a MAK currently being used on a standard tripod with ball head and its HORRIBLE!!!.. lol Its 1500 and yes if i center the moon in the frame which it pretty much takes up the moon is off the screen with in a couple of shots.

Problem i have when it start to move when i losen off the ballhead to move it i end up losing the dam thing all together so i have ordered a new mount for now but its going to take a couple of weeks to get.
Here is the Scope (external link)

and this is the mount i ordered, only for keeping the moon in frame.. with out losing it.. Until i can afford a good GOTO mount. (external link)

A go to mount would be so nice, but that won't happen for me for a very long time...lol. The EQ mount on mine was having a bit of a time with the weight of the camera, but it's didn't move around on me at least. May need to rig up a heavier counter-weight.

I'm actually thinking of building some better legs for my scope because the wooden ones that came with it are way to flimsy. That may be a spring project for me.

Is it the Eq1 mount?

Thats why i went with the AZ3 mount from what i have read on it, it is designed for 10 pounds so my 7 pound scope and 2 pound camera should work fine.

Michael, an Alt-Az mount is fine for shooting the moon, but won't be any good for long exposures unless you're shooting directly east or west. As for why your moon is upside-down, some scopes do flip the image. I like the shot though...pretty sharp right to the edges.
