So first off this semester i am "working" for Chico State's newspaper as a photographer, yay! Anyways on Friday i have my first baseball game. I have never shot this sport before and am looking forward to it as i love baseball. My question is where to shoot from and who to ask. I believe i could be able to get clearence to get inside the fence. I just dont know who to ask about this. And also if i am granted access how does this process work, do i shoot from the dugout or what?? Any light on this subject would be great. I have a 40D and 70-200 f/2.8 so hopefully i'll be able to get close enough?

Also i would like to get shots from many locations so will i be allowed to move across the field inbetween innings or how does this work?

Im not used to having access to places to shoot so i am excited and just a little confused. Thanks

As for permission to shoot inside the fence, ask the SID or the coach once you get there. Get there early to do this, not when the games going or doing infield/outfield. If there's not an area for you to be covered while shooting inside the fence my guess is they won't let you in there as a foul ball could kill you. WATCH YOUR BACKSIDE! If you're switching sides of the field between innings keep your head up and don't walk behind the catcher in the middle of a pitch, do it in between.

On the field there's not many locations for most fields and the 70-200 isn't long enough for shooting from the stands if far away. I shot with that lens for awhile and it's not much reach for the game without a 1.4.

The sports editor should be making all the arrangements for you as far as credentials and parking goes. That field has gone thru alot of renovations since the time I covered a game there in the late 80's. From the pics on there web site it looks like a nice field now and lots of open angles to shot from, I can't tell but they may even have photo pits to the sides of the dug outs. Best way to find these out is to contact the SID for baseball.

I saw your shots from the game and I am pretty impressed and also jealous that you guys get to play baseball this time of year. We are limited to what time we can get in a dome or indoor pitching tunnel up here in NH. But you know those pics really gave me an appetite for this coming spring...Thanks!
