Looking at http://www.psdale.com/PSD/100-400on400Da.jpg (external link)

The answer is yes as the tripod plate faces away from the camera body.

God.. its one heck of a lens (it looks like a marrow);), I hope to get it the back of this year ready for my next safari 2010.
I used my 75-300 a few times on holiday after my new 24-105 being on my camera 98% of my trip and realizing what a poor lens it was(the 75-300).

Ah, im just in love with my 300L. I want the 2.8 but weight is the issue. Should give some longer primes a try for a Safari. :)

Securely: Yes.
100% stable and vibration free: I doubt it.

I noticed the same when I bought the 100-400, the 75-300 images were crap in comparison.

M5Man,

As a minimum, step up one to the 055.

Get a better head? Such as, Markins Q3. I have a 190 and it is pretty stable.
