Hi all,

I hope this is more appropriate in Accessories than in Flash. I want to get a motor cord to fire my 40D by PW (the CM-N3), but definitely can't justify the price tag for the genuine part. Does anybody have good or bad experience using third party cables? Specifically, this is the one I am considering:

http://www.amazon.com …rd_r=0RPSE32X18JYMZE9R74Z (external link)

Also, do I understand correctly that the pre-trigger cord (CM-N3-P) simulates a half-depress of the shutter release by always activating this (AF, exposure, or whatever it's set to)? Would I then have to set the AF mode to AI SERVO and just hope the subject is within the focusing point? Seems like more of a challenge...

So, since the radio triggers available on ebay are about the same price as the 3rd party motor cord, and half the price of a genuine CM-N3, would there be any real benefit to the motor cord at all?

for a remote camera use manual focus not servo, it will burn out th AF motor and hardly any will be in focus if you rely on AF.

That would be true if using the Pocket Wizard Plus II units. However, there is a way to get around this issue if using a MultiMax which has a special accessory port near the foot of the unit. Using a special "stereo" release cable, focusing can be activated and deactivated at will by enabling and disabling, on the transmitter, the zone used for triggering the camera. This simulates the half-pressing and not half-pressing of the shutter button. Focusing, of course, would need to be linked to the shutter button instead of the "*" button.

Yep, www.flashzebra.com (external link).

I bought the cable from Lon and it works like a charm. Very nice price as well.
