Hi,

I was very hesitant in picking up this body (5D classic), because of so many -ve postings (most of them by Canon users) about how bad and slow is the autofocus in that camera. Especially highlighting the useless outer AF points.

I was very skeptical about buying into 3 year old technology, and was not very sure about the raves I've heard about IQ either.

I immediately started to feel drawn towards Nikon camp, ....D700. But, because of lack of enough funds could not afford it, and bought 5D anyways.

I started testing with this cam for about 4 days, when my friend came over for visit with his wonderful D700.

I compared both the cams side by side. D700 is a new cam with all new bells and whistles of modern new world.

But let me tell you folks, for the people like me (with less money) a used 5D Classic is the best deal in the town. The IQ is comparable. High ISO obviously...... D700 does it better.

With my 5D, I have no complaints about the AF accuracy. I have used center AF point as well as outer AF points. AF works on this 3 year old cam like a charm even in dark. And for me it is not slow at all. My pictures from this cam have come out absolutely beautiful and worth putting it on my living room wall.

At the end, I would just like to say THANK YOU CANON, for such a good camera, which works beautifully and flawlessly. Which still hold its value, even after 3 years of intense technological advancements.

SALUTE TO ENGINEERS IN CANON. I LOVE YOU.

People who bash this camera are very wrong, and sends out false impression to new buyers like myself.

5D = my favourite camera of all time (as you can probably tell from this thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=462416 I encourage you to join in) . The outer point AF is usable for sure, but relatively poor compared to the alternatives. Otherwise, it's incredible, I don't feel any slowness with it except for mild shutter lag compared to my 1D3.

And most, if not all of the 'bashers' of the 5D (and any other camera/lens) haven't even used one, let alone own one.

Enjoy! :D

you certainly picked up a keeper, the only way to make a camera better is the ISO and 5d is very good. all the other functions are just for show and wont really help you in making better photos. (video, live view, ergonomic buttons etc) :)

Congrats for getting a great camera!

Just for perspective, most of the "complaints" have come from comparing the Classic to either the "pro" 1D line of cameras, which have unbeatable AF, and those comparing to the most recent Canon bodies which have some added capabilities around the outer points. But the 5D retains a very high reputation for center point AF and is not terrible in the outer points, just not up to the standards of this last year.

The image quality set a standard 3 1/2 years ago and still is the basis for all of the current camera comparisons. Improvements in the best of class most recent cameras have been incremental, and though resolution has certainly been improved, the cool thing is that the 5D still stands tall. The 5D2 has been shown to have some very real improvements but nothing that would knock the Classic down from a rating of excellent.

Enjoy a true classic!

 I have a 5D and bought the 5DMKII. I refuse to sell my 5D, because I like it that much............bw!

I know what your saying about the dashers, but everyone that`s Happy with it never posts anything.
The information you get on the web comes from people that have no idea what they`re taling about most of the time. Like others have stated, people that have never used or owned one..... Congratulations on a GREAT Camera.

Even with the 'old' technology, I bought it for the ergonomics and dynamic range of the sensor - I shoot mainly MF primes, and the 5D really takes advantage of them :D

That about sums it up.

Far too many people whose existence in life seems to be supported by the need to moan and complain about stuff they've often got not a clue about.

At the time I bought mine I was regularly using a MkIIn, a DsMkII and a D2X and I'd have taken the 5D over all of them. These days I regularly get small chances to mess about with D300's and D700's and the new 5DII and I still think the old camera holds its own exceptionally well. It's bettered now, but it's still a fantastic piece of kit.

Cheers, Dave.

as far as I am concerned people are not complaining about slow AF, people are complaining about outer focus points exclusively. They are right too. Center focus point is top notch in any lighting conditions, outer focus points on the other hand ....a joke. And let's not start another "recompose and stop whining thread"

Where? The 5D is a much celebrated camera and you'll see many recommendations for used 5Ds as a camera of choice by many Canon shooters. I'm surprised you're finding 'so many negative postings'.

In this case I think not. To start with, I think the OP is taking this whining about the AF points out of context. The thing is, the 5D has always been an absolute great performer for image quality. There are only a few things that could really be better about it (especially considering its vintage) and so the owners who really love this camera also tend to harp on these few naggling things.

That's certainly the case for me. I own and love the 5D, but I do complain about the outer AF points, mainly because they start to hunt right when the lighting is at the point that I need them most because I cannot focus recompose.

+1. That about sums it up. The outer focus points are fine in good light, but pretty sketchy in low light.
