Alright i have a 580exii, and also have access to a 580ex. I can set the exii as the master and the regular ex as a slave right? So i would have to have the exii on camera as the trigger, where would be a good spot to set the slave? Should i try to bounce if possible?? I'll probably have some more questions in a bit, im new to this whole flash thing! Also if anyone has any examples of this set up (on camera flash and one slave), i would love to see them.

You can do this. First, get the two speedlites, then go and experiment. I did this.

I found that the off-camera speedlite needed to be in a position to easily "see" the speedlite on camera. In a large gym there is not much effective opportunity for off-camera flash to "see" the master via any bounced light. Therefore you must position your speedlites carefully. You can probably only do this by trial and error.

For me what always worked was to sit in front of a light-colored wall and point my master flash (on camera) backwards to bounce off the wall. I positioned the slave flash behind me where the master flash was pointing. Thus the slave always saw the master and always fired. Here is a gallery of photos taken this way: http://twsp.zenfolio.com/p227236658 (external link)

If the master was pointed at the action or bounced off the ceiling, then its light was never seen by the slave.

If you are going to site along the baseline, try bouncing off the ceiling with one and the back wall (flash on the floor next to you) firing into the wall. That could give you some nice coverage for a bounced flash look.
