Ok, before you yell at me to check the threads that there are tons on this subject, I will tell you I have. I have checked the threads, I have checked websites , I've looked at all kinds of pictures. I'm still at a loss. I posted a long time ago about a bag and I never changed bags and now all of my gear is different so I am in need of asking again.

I prefer backpack style, but, was also thinking of a crumpler bag (if this is practical for me, I mostly shoot sports). I've considered a slingshot but not sure I am comfortable with the strap across my chest.
Edit: sling is out, I just tested one, didn't like it

I would like a bag that holds:

40D with Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 attached (this is a must, I use this lens 99% of the time and prefer it to stay attached to the camera)
Tamron 28-75mm 2.8
Canon 50mm 1.8
1.4x extender
430ex flash
extra cards, cleaning stuff, filters, gray card and a few other things.
Possibly my laptop (this is not a must)
Monopod

I am leaning toward the tamrac adventure bags, I like how they zip around the middle and open. The backpack I have now I am always afraid I am going to open it and everything is going to fall out.

I'm really hoping to keep it less then $100 but if there isn't anything in that price range that will work for me, I will obviously have to go higher.

This is probably unrealistic but I also prefer one that isn't really big and bulky, but yet is very sturdy to hold my equipment.

So if you've gotten through this thread and didn't turn back, any chance you can give me ideas?

7D / 40D / 70-200mm 2.8L / Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 / 50mm 1.8 / Canon 85mm F/1.8 / kenko 1.4 / 580ex

I'd look at a Domke F-802 shoulder bag. I carry a 20D/70-200 2.8 and 5D/24-70 plus Sigma 15-30 and a 580EX flash in mine, using the Domke 720-230 insert. Plenty of room in the front pockets for extra cards and stuff. I've put a slim laptop in the outside back pocket on occasion, but I prefer to leave the laptop at my base of operations and just carry the cameras with me. Since it's a shoulder bag, everything's readily accessible without having to remove the bag.

Tamrac Adventure 9 would maybe fit your needs (lens, laptop, etc), but I dont think you can have the lens attached, in fact, the website shows it with the lens next to the body

the Adventure 10 shows the lens attached, but I dont know if it meets/exceeds your criteria for "huge" http://www.tamrac.com/5550.htm (external link)

I like the adventure series, I got the 7, I could fit the XSI nice and confortable with the 55-250mm, and had room to spare, plus the bag is not a HUGE bag (well, the 7 anyway), and it doesn't look like camera bag either which is a big plus when traveling around the NYC subways

you can also look at the lowepro Fastpack series. You will probably need something like the fastpack 350

What Jon said. I just got the velocity and love it! I would have been so glad to have this with me when I was shooting football as it holds my monopod as well. It's so awesome, might want to consider it as well.

Check my review on it. There's no Crumpler I would recommend. None fitted for what you need.

Is the velocity a sling? I was very interested in this after reading your review and seeing pics, but then I looked it up and it said it was a sling.
I just came back from best buy...while I was there I checked out one of the slings just to see how it would feel, and I was uncomfortable with it, so a sling is out :(

About a messenger bag... I have thought about them before, and wanted one over a backpack, for the reasons stated, easier to get to. However, sometimes I carry my bag while shooting, I think this would be hard to handle, the reason I am leaning towards a backpack?

Hum, the adventure 10 looks huge ... but the fastpack 350 looks like something for me to think about, thank you.

Different slings ft differently. I hated the Slingshot. Didn't have it long. The Tamrac is built a lot better

Tamrac 5263!!! It is not a back pack and I have a tamrac backpac that holds my laptop too. But will not hold it with my 70-200 attatched.

I wanted it to hold my 40d and 70-200 along with my old 20d and 24-70. now got a mk2n for the 20d and holds it fine.
can hold my laptop and has rollers.
Still has room for flash and all other essentials.

NP,

and even though the slings look cool, and seem to be easy to get to, just think about the 7-10 Lbs (Not Including your laptop) you will be walking around with pressing down on one shoulder

I have the Velocity 9X and it is a good bag, but I don't like the zipper going in one direction. It is a sling bag, very useful. I love my Domke F-802 which I use whenever I have to take the 40D or 5DII with 70-200 2.8 IS. The F-5XB is too small. The Domke is a shoulder bag, but you can easily get to your gear and nothing will fall out if you use the latch. I also have the Kata 214 and that is a torso bag and you can sling it. Nothing will fall out of it as it has an amazing system to zip it up.

Only time I carry a backpack is if I'm doing more walking than shooting, and even then, I'm likely to toss a set of backpack straps onto my Domke shoulder bag(s). The bag's almost always on my shoulder, and I've weighed typical loads at up to 35 lb. (before I gave up weighing my bags; well - something had to give!).
