I just received my Minolta MD to Eos non-AF adapter for my MD 50/1.7.
The funny thing is I have no idea how to use it,which setting P,TV ,Av or M on my also new, 2 week old 450D. I loved it 20 yrs ago on my X-700 in p mode.
All thoughts welcomed.

Av or M modes. Av is prefered, that way all you have to do is change ISO and ShutterSpeed in order to get proper exposure, the lens will always tell your camera 00, and thats perfectly fine, because the meter is still going to calculate exposure from the light it is receiving thru the lens and calculating exposure off that reading given your selected ISO + Shutter Speeds. Thats how I use all my manual focus lenses... Av. (I like many spend 90+% in Av mode anyways).

thanks Alan, I have a lot to learn, the MD adapted lens IQ is not as good as my 18-55 IS kit lens,I compared both at 50mm at F4. I was told in another post that its due to the inferior glass used in the adapter... Are all you adapters AF-confirming?

I just picked up the Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5 Macro (OM mount) from KEH. I understand it's a Tokina, and the same design that earned the "Bokina" nickname?

What you read was correct, unfortunately. The glass in those adapters is going to degrade the image. Most people don't bother adapting Minolta lenses for this reason, and the same goes for Canon FD lenses. A few convert mounts, but from what I've seen the process involves milling and isn't for the faint of heart.

:-) I think I misread this post/posts re: the adapter messing up his OM mount lenses' image quality when used on his camera.
I am like 99.999% certain that the Olympus Mount Lenses (OM=Olympus) adapt onto our EOS'es without any of those nasty optical bits neccessary for some mounts (ie:Canon FD!) to be able to achieve Infinity focus.

~Need A Lens Suggestion~

• Going to be shooting some Night Time Long Exposure Landscapes With Star Trails.
• My 80mm Equivalent Zeiss Pancolar is to narrow for my envisioned shots and locations.
• I can make anything from a 20 to 24 to 28 to 35 work for me.
• Prefer a M42 Mount but am open minded for the right high quality lens.
• Can't afford the Leica 35 R 2.8 unless I stumble across a bargain or an uber-user lens at a discount (which I would definitely be interested in!). Know one? Please PM ME!

Richard

There are OM (not the newer OM FourThirds) adapters to EF/EOS. I am using one myself.

It does not have glass.

My Rollei Zeiss 16/2.8 came in the other day. It felt like it would never arrive

There is sooo much choice.

20mm ... i prefer a M42 Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20/2.8 for about usd400
24mm ... i prefer a C/Y Yashica 24/2.8 not sure what it costs
35mm ... i am trying out a M42 Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35/2.4 (costs about usd150)

However, there is much more choice!
C/Y mounts are very nice as well, i personally prefer those, since it locks into the mount.

What is your budget?

I'd try looking at the Zuiko 21/3.5 if you can find one reasonably priced.

Thanks for the tips! about Lenses for my Night Landscape With Star Trails.
I'm afraid I'm -humbly- trying to find something on the cheap!
Cash is very tight and these images will be for a break-even (maybe!) Charity Event.
If circumstances force it, I'll find the money to get a lens I'd be longing to own, but 'good enough' in this case really would be 'good enough'.
Does anyone have any image sample links for the Yashica listed above?
Richard

M42 Helios 44-2 (the lens died due to a botched cleaning attempt and some overly playful kids...) :(

OM adapter with Zuiko 50/3.5 macro (just got it)

My OM to EOS adaptor arrived the other day, will be interesting to use it - didn't get a AF confirm mount, just bought a 5 pound cheap one. the lens mounting is a lil loose to the adaptor, but the adaptor to the body is solid. Might invest in a better one later if I enjoy using it.

Yeah, can anyone suggest an OM to EOS adaptor without AF confirm that is working well for you? I'll probably just be eventually getting a Zuiko 21 3.5 and setting it to F8 and finding the sweet spot for the best focus and leaving it there. Since it will stay on this setting, I won't need focus confirmation.

I just bought this adapter for $15.99 (shipping from China included). It's a bit more than what I paid for my M42 adapter but the difference is only like $5 and the seller communicated very promptly. The adapter works like a charm, allows focusing to infinity, has the right stop pin, and overall is well made.

Seller id is cowy07, and here's another one he's selling at same price:

http://cgi.ebay.com …|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318 (external link)

He warned me right away that shipping would take 3 weeks and maybe more because of tightened security after Olympic games. I received it exactly 3 weeks after I made the payment.

I've only snapped a few shots so far but the results are pleasing. Didn't try to go outside and zoom to infinity, but I can turn the lens all the way to infinity sign, so I assume it works fine.

Added: regarding focus confirmation, what works for me is (1) get the right exposure at desired aperture (using the viewfinder EC scale), (2) open blades all the way & focus, (3) set it back and take a shot. This is actually easily done with the way Zuiko lens is built, with aperture ring located at the very end of the barrel and rather standing out, so I can grab & turn it without moving the camera, and count clicks to the right setting. This is not perfect but honestly I think it beats having to guesstimate the fixed "right" distance all the time. Just my $.02.
