So, I think this is a good idea from Nikon (a nice, cheap, normal prime for crop sensor cameras) and I think Canon should come out with something similar, but I can't believe Nikon came out with something like this while their FF wide prime selection sucks so bad.

Eh, the 35 f/2 is an OK lens, but it's definitely a very dated design..

Yep, very dated design (and supposedly not as good as the MF version that preceded it). That version is so dated that it's from the era where you have to use screw-in hoods (and before Nikon routinely included hoods with their lenses).

Also, uses screwdriver AF, so it wouldn't AF on the D40(x)/D60.

If they can make money on that price, this lens looks like a winner.

But definitely, their FX wide prime selection stinks.

I suspect it'll cut into Sigma 30mm f1.4 sales in the Nikon mount.
I'd like to see Canon produce something like this but am not holding my breath. They sure seem to be behind Nikon in lens development in my view, seeing as they just released a 18-200mm IS lens like the Nikon's 18-200VR.
