Is this a Glaucus Gull? It seemed to be a pretty big deal at the place I went to yesterday.

Spotted in London, UK.

From what I see online, the winter plumage looks similar to this. What else (boringly common) could it be instead?

Could be a juvenile yes.
The beak looks like a Herring and not like a Glaucous.

Defo a herring gull.. we have ton of them crapping on my car all year round! it it were not raining right now they would be sitting outside on my windowsill!

Bad luck Pete,
Dont worry mate your not the first and you wont be the last to think you've spotted something out of the ordinary. These immature gulls are a nightmare to ID, what with Juve, 1st winter, 2nd winter, 3rd winter and even a 4th winter variation in large gulls. Then theres countless hybrid variants. I've just bought the Helm identification Guide for Gulls of europe, asia and north america. What a nightmare! :)
