Zenfolio just sent me an email explaining a new program which allows photographers to sell digital images. It sound interesting. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts regarding what price one would put on digital copies. The way I understood it, different limitations can be associated with different price points.

I would appreciate any advice or thoughts regarding pursuing this "new" opportunity.

since i mainly shoot things that i really only have editorial content usage for (concerts), this really doesn't affect me at all.

Price is going to depend on how you license the images, what size you're selling, what the intended use is, etc.

I see it more as a way to sell to a specific audience or client more than to people just randomly browsing through your galleries.

I've sold stuff directly to artists a couple times (promo stuff), and I think the digital download thing would be a nicer process than handing over a CD and taking a check or paypal. It's an easy way to accept credit/debit cards anyway. You can always just add the 8% on to your normal price.

FINALLY! I would price things differently depending on subject. Sports, I already have a system in place outside of zenfolio where its $5 a shot. I would do the same here. For weddings, I would price them according to file size. I dont expect someone only wanting an image for facebook to pay the same as someone wanting to make a 11x14 print out of it. I will have to go over pricing list with this... This has taken far to long for zenfolio to get this in place, but I am glad its finally here.

It seems like a good opportunity. I would think it would, depending on the price, cause the print market to go away. I just thought, as I am typing, that for sporting events folks may buy one copy and distribute copies to the whole team. Maybe that isn't bad, depending on the price.

I appreciate the responses; however, the only number I see is $5. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe look into what the smugmug users have been doing? They have had that feature in place for quite awhile. I dont think the print market will go away, however just keep your prices close to the print prices to avoid losing profits. For instance, if you charge $10 for an 8x10 print and the print cost you $2, just charge $8 for the digital image... something like that? Just thinking out loud here...
