This just came in today. It's a Helios 44-2, I think it is the KMZ version. I was surprised that it is absolutely mint, I bought this not know anything about it's condition because it was bundled with a Zenti-E and the seller only described the body while briefly mentioning this lens was included.

SMC Takumar bokeh @ f/1.4.

I really like the colors from the Helios, has that old school film kind look to it.

Zeiss 50mm 1.7 @ f2, Curves and USM in PS (click for larger version):

I love the sharpness of this lens, but the bokeh (leaves in the upper left corner) is somewhat of a disappointment. Still, considering I payed the equivalent of 15 Big Macs (just the burger) for this lens, I'm quite pleased with it...

The helios 44-2 is the best cheap lens i have ever used. If you get a good copy, the optical quality blows the nifty fifty out of park. My biggest issue with it is the aperture control, you sort of have to guesstimate unless you use the annoying aperture limiter.

I haven't used the helios, but the Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 for olympus bodies is extremely cheap (can be had for $10!) and also blows the nifty fifty out of the water. It's so cheap because it was the olympus kit lens.

Where? On eBay there's usually a bidding war over this old glass now that people have found out about using them on dSLR's.

Well, they've already found out about the Zuiko 50mm f/2 macro which Mike Johnston proclaimed as one of the best 50s ever made. Took me 2 years to find one that was even remotely affordable!

yeah, that's a pricey and rare lens. The f/1.4 is even much cheaper! And the f/1.8 is so cheap because they made them in volume.

^^ You're right on! I've heard the 1.4 isn't so hot, but that's just the along the grapevine. I can vouch for the 1.8 though (I've got one); I'm always startled at how something so cheap can produce such good pictures.

After trying out a few adapted Leica/Contax Zeiss lenses a few years ago the slippery slope was well and truly hit and now my entire sub-135mm kit is Leica & Zeiss.

Here's a selection from the archives:

The Phoenix? What can I say? It seemed like a good idea at the time. But even it is not without it's artistic possibilities. (I'll link an image here (external link) instead of displaying it, since that would violate the intent of the thread.) You just can't make very big prints. It is a LOT lighter than the 500mm Prakticar, however. I'll make some images with it for this thread, when I get my truck fixed (so I can haul it around).

Rick "for whom the Phoenix is not the only lens with an unresolved question mark next to it" Denney

Did you ever get around to posting any shots from the Phoenix?

Jon.

My adapter finally made it in for the Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4. This is my first MF lens but so far I am really enjoying it! All the images I took were at f/1.4 and the rest can be found HERE (external link).
