Both of you with your beautiful Helios shots are making me jealous. I think if I get any Christmas money I'll get one for myself. Wife has forbidden any more camera gear spending for the time being.

I got my Helios 44-4 in the states for $40 in mint condition. It was far from painful expenditure ;)

Heya,

Vintage lenses, as long as they're not the super popular ones in terms of telephoto ranges, will generally be inexpensive. Just shop. I buy them on the bay all the time for dirt.

I went for an older 44-2 because I specifically wanted it to say "Made in USSR" on it for historical purposes, just for fun. As I like to call it my Russian lens' even though it's actually not Russian by design, just by post WW2 production in Soviet Russia.

There are plenty of vintage lenses that cost more than a modern one, and are not even optically as good, but they fetch high dollar due to rarity, uniqueness, highly sought after, etc. Examples are the Helios 40-1 (silver), the now modern made 40-2 Helios (black), the Trioplan 100 F2.8 (I want this so bad, but my god they cost a mint), and even simple things like the Jupiter 9.

But lots of great things are in the $20~60 range. That's the beauty of old glass, in that you can get some good old stuff for cheap. That way when you have some G.A.S., you can take a sip of some older stuff and it not cost you a mint.

That said, I recently picked up one of the most reknown-to-be-the-worst-lens for next to nothing, because people literally give them away or throw them away, the Domiplan 50 F2.8 in M42 mount. Awful lens apparently. I have one, and it's minimum focus distance is horrible, and it's not sharp at all, and it's just a poor lens in every way, even build. But I got it because it shares some designs with the much more expensive Trioplan. Sole reason I got it was to attempt to produce bokeh orbs with the interesting outline that it has, such as with water drops. Will post soon if I manage to make it do anything useful. Otherwise, it will just be a shelf-prop.

Very best,

Awesome shots all :)

I'm very tempted to sell my 44M-4 & just use the 44-2

^^^ What do you think of that Zeiss 200/4? Have you played with a number of Zeiss teles?

I like the Zeiss 200/4 it's the sharpest vintage 200mm I have. It looses quite a bit of the sharpness with the Mutar II 2x teleconverter though -- pretty much only use the Mutar II in bright light.
Other mf 200 mm I have are Pentacon 200/4 (preset), Vivatar Series I 200/3, and SMC Takumar 200/4. The Takumar is pretty close to the Zeiss, maybe not as sharp. The Pentacon and Vivatar are not as sharp as the Zeiss. The Vivatar can have horrendous green/purple fringing in high contrast out-of-focus areas, though I like its distinctive colors.
