My boy recently conquered his fear of his balance bike, and now he wants to get out on it all of the time.

Turns out I had it way off, 210mm was not the most magnification, it was the least!

70mm produces the most and boy does it get close! here's it with a 10mm tube.

( it is for sale in my signature already converted...)

If anyone needs adapters I just posted some in the FS section.

Will try to get more pics from the Vivitar Series 1 soon, just waiting on the tripod mount for it.

Heya,

Wide on APS-C with old MF lenses will be difficult. The inexpensive ones are 28mm at the widest generally. Wider than that, in old MF lenses, is very rare and tends to be costly. You could look at things like the Rokinon 16mm F2, Tokina 17mm, otherwise, an 18-55 STM is inexpensive and wide.

For MF lenses, I like the old Tamron 28mm F2.8 Adaptall 2. Very sharp wide open. Well made lens. Tends to be $40~50. But 28mm on APS-C isn't very wide.

I have two 28mm's, the Super Takumar & the Tamron. Ultimately I like the Tamron better (F2.8 and sharp at F2.8, plus very close focusing distance). That said, the Super Takumar 28 F3.5 is a great lens, very sharp too, and inexpensive.

Super Takumar 28mm F3.5 on APS-C to give you an idea of what you could expect ($40~50 lens with $10 adapter?):

And a pano:

**************

Alternative, if you don't mind a zoom, take a look at the Tamron 28-70 adaptall2. It does close focusing (macro), 28mm (wide on full frame, normal field of view on APS-C), and is pretty sharp. It's not prime fast, but if you wanted a lot of focal range options that go as wide as 28mm, with quality sharpness and rendering, it's a great lens for $30! Adaptall2 mount adapter like $15 or so, just a piece of metal. I have one and it's pretty nice.

**************

And there's decent 20mm's out there, like the MIR 20mm F3.5 in M42 mount. About $150.

The problem is, the moment you get close to $100 or so, you have the Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM available new and it's a very good lens.

For wide options, I find MF old lenses are not a good deal in general (for APS-C at least).

I find that MF lenses are great in the 28~85mm ranges for what you can find. I personally don't like spending more than $50 on an old lens though, since as soon as you get close to $100 or $200, there's modern versions available that are very good.

But a lot of what attracts me to MF lenses adapted is simply the interest of an old lens and making it work 30+ years later. Also some old character of rendering of lenses is interesting. Most of it is out of interest though, not out of simply being a better deal (often it's not).

Very best,

Without having to get a new adapter, any one of the OM 28s are pretty good. The 28/3.5 is really good if you don't need the speed, though my old copy had a distinct fall off in sharpness and contrast at f/16 (which is the min aperture). I don't know if I have any OM 28/3.5 photos in my gallery, but I'll see if I can find any older posts to put in there.

If you want something better than that, and close to the performance of the best available, the C/Y Distagon 28/2.8 can be had in the $300-400 region. I have a lot of D28 photos in my gallery, feel free to poke around.

I would also recommend the EF-S 24/2.8 for APS-C cameras. The Yashica ML 28/2.8 is also really good and fairly cheap.

I'd be willing to sell my Yashica ML 28/2.8 and also my Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9, PM me if you're interested.
