I'm not much of a 'tripod guy' because I tend to do most of my photography on the go....hiking, backpacking, etc....and extra accessories tend to just get in the way.

However, there are times where I'd like to have a tripod.

That led me to consider the
Bogen-Manfrotto Modo Maxi:

Seems like a decent value for the price. Weighs 3lbs and I don't want to get any heavier.

Does anyone else have suggestions for a 'light-weight' tripod setup? Low weight is the most crucial element in the equation, but I also need to make sure that I'm not throwing money toward something that is going to fall apart.

If anyone has another idea for putting together a light-weight tripod setup that will not exceed 3lbs, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance....

What do you intend to put on the tripod and how do you intend to use it? How tall are you? These factors play a VERY important part in making a choice.

Expect to pay a very high price for a lightweight tripod which will be sturdy and stiff enough to be truly useful and anywhere near as tall as you are.

Ooops.....I meant to include that but forgot.

I'm 6 foot. And the heaviest combination of tripod/lens would be my 40D with my 70-200 f/4 'IS'! Typically when I hike in ultra-light mode, I'll just go with my 17-40mm.

I'm with you here....as I don't need convincing of this.

That's why I'm trying to figure out what range of options I could be looking for. It very well could be that I decide that what I'm looking for is just not economically feasible.

The big thing I'm trying to avoid is throwing my money toward something on the 'cheaper' end that may end up more trouble than it's really worth.

Thanks.

Ive got the Modo at the moment and thinking about replacing it as with a heavy body/lens combination, it will tend to creep as the clamp is not very strong.

To give you an example of the set up i use - 400D+grip+sigma 18-50 F2.8.

This is about the absolute limit before it moves (if i add my flash it will start to creep or move when trying to set the clamp)
