I was seriously considering upgrading my 5D to a 5D Mark II until I read about these failures...

Anyone else experience 5D Mark II problems?

taking a non-weather sealed camera (of any make) and using it in a hostile environment is taking a chance of failure. I wouldn't be concerned if it were me.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

There's already a long thread on this (something like "Oh, oh, weather problems") but the short answer is: Nobody who has taken their 5D2 to Antarctica since then has any similar problems.

Nor are people in places like Canada and Sweden reporting such problems.

I would say if you're going into a hostile environment, get a 1D.

Otherwise, right here at home the 5DMK2 is the ticket. :)

Sure, but they advertise it as weather resistant, don't they?

The article also said "not one Nikon was damaged" UGH!!

Yeah, your 5D Classic will perform much better under the same conditions.

It has been suggested that moisture may build up between the body and the grip when using a grip...so probably best not to use the grip if in a wet, rainy environment. I believe this may be the case with the problems reported by LL.

I have had my camera lock up on me (flashed "busy" on top lcd), and I had to remove the battery to get it going again.

Another common "problem" that is often misdiagnosed is the dof preview button seems to be a bit easier to push while shooting than with the 5D. This can lead to the perception that the AF is intermittently not working.

Either they had a bad batch, salt water, or user stupidity..

Well this is actually the second report of Canon doing badly in Antarctica and Nikon coming up roses. There was a very similar article last year or maybe the year before that's pretty much the same story. It's getting pretty clear that if your planing a trip to Antarctica, don't bring Canon cameras as they don't seem to do well in that environment.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Not seriously. "...the EOS 5D Mark II now has dust and water resistance that is almost equal to that of the EOS-1N—Canon’s top-of-the-line professional 35mm SLR for most of the 1990’s" isn't an enthusiastic endorsement, and that's the closest thing to a statement of actual weather performance that Canon has put into print.

Are you planning on taking your 5DII to Antarctica? If not, you should be ok...

If he is, and insists on using the grip, he may wish to weather seal the NOW non-weather sealed parts. DUH

I know we've gotten a decent amount of snow here in Jersey in the past few weeks, but unless you're planning a trip to Antarctica or possibly an extended hike in the desert I think you'd be safe. Now taking photos while walking around in Camden that may be a different story, but then again it wouldn't be the weather sealing that you would have to worry about.

Seriously though, I just had my 5DII out in the light rain for about 15 mins. this morning and everything worked out well.

The only thing that really scares me is beer...that is about the most adverse precipitation I ever find myself shooting in.
