I sent in my Canon 100-400L to the Canon Factory Service Center in New Jersey this past Monday and received this repair estimate today. I purchased the lens from B&H on July 23, 2008 so it's well within warranty. It has a possible focusing problem along with I feel poor image quality. I was under the impression that I wouldn't be charged for something like this. I've got steam coming out of my ears right now as I write this!

The lens wasn't damaged in any way shape or form by you?
If not, and if it's under warranty, you definitely should not have been charged for this.

I'd remind them the lens is still under warranty.

Did you register your lens and/or send in the warranty card with proof of purchase? Perhaps you should give them a call, it could be a misunderstanding about the warranty. This is just an estimate correct? At least they didn't proceed with the work without permission and invoice it.

OP states it is an estimate, not an actual repair...

And why get upset, just call and discuss. If the lens is truly under warranty, they will honor it.

I registered the lens online after purchase. There is no damage whatsover to the lens, in fact I only actually used it maybe 10 times and it looks brand new. They haven't done any repairs and they didn't say what the repairs would be...just the estimate was provided. I don't think they know since there is only the 'labor' charge listed. I was originally thinking that just a calibration would do the trick. Along with the lens I sent copies of the bill of sale, warranty cards. I'll be calling them first thing in the morning.

OK.
So just have your paperwork ready, call them up, perhaps ask them if they need you to resend/fax to them.

This is definitely a warranty item.

You turned it in for a "possible focusing problem" and for something you "feel is poor quality". Sounds like your looking for a problem. Your warranty covers manufacturers defects and not "possible problems" and something that you feel is poor quality. I think its high time people get charged for fraudulent claims. What is there to repair?

relax. Just call them and mention you got a bill but the item still under warranty. Same thing happened to me. You'll get another estimate with all 0000's.

This is harsh and unwarranted, you're basically implying that the OP is some lowlife who has nothing better to do than to troll Canon...

I can tell you that Canon QC is not something one should trust

yep, I do boring, time consuming test shots of text for every new lens I get. I do see problems from time to time.
