I know this has been discussed before about the possibility of a IS version of this lens.. but today I was in a local camera store talking to the salesman about purchasing the Canon 24-70 and we got to talking and he said they are going to release a 24-70 2.8 IS within the next week or two. He said he just found out about 2 days ago.

Can anybody else confirm this? I can easily wait a couple weeks to get one with IS.

If they did, I'd be surprised.

It's a brick enough as it is. The IS would add a bit more weight and it would probably be very useful, but it won't happen, I don't think.

Salesmen are always talking out their asses. When I was buying my car, a second salesman overheard our guy losing the sale due to not wanting to give us a warranty. Like clockwork he came up and said "you know, we had another guy just in here looking at this very same car." So I told him, okay then let that guy buy it. And I left. He chased me down and gave me the warranty. I drove the car home.

I can't be certain, I'd have to go back and ask. Although I'm not sure why he would tell me about it when I was interested in buying one, because that news put the sale off.

I wouldn't doubt $1600 range and I'm not sure how the weight would pan out. Maybe a re-design?

I guess I'll wait a couple weeks and see.

I don`t get it why people think that. Look at the 70-200 IS and no IS version. Absolutely no difference in size maybe a little weight.
I think it is very possible but maybe not in the near future.

If this happens soon though I will have to do what I never thought I would do. Sell my 24-105 IS

does Canon have a history of putting new lenses out in the market without any anticipation or buildup?

A 24-70 with IS has been talked about before PMA every year for at least the last 3 years - and I for one would love IS on the 24-70.

The 24L II and 35L II sorta came outta nowhere. So anything's possible. I just don't think IS on the 24-70 is likely. I think Canon is not releasing it just to be spiteful.
