If true, I suspect this will finally bring an end to all the 24-70 vs 24-105 threads...

Nope... nada... won't happen. Not until they release a 24-105mm f/2.8L IS. People will still struggle with the extra reach from 71-105mm even though it is f/4.

Here's hoping. I certainly wouldn't mind a dip in prices on the current 24-70.

I think this will happen. Neither Nikon or Canon have a VR/IS lens in the 24-70 f2.8 range and this seems to be a feature demanded by many.

Yeah, it probably will happen. Just get ready for it to have an 82mm filter thread.

Hehehehe...I think we'll be seeing a lot of "is the 24-70 IS worth the extra money over the 24-105 IS" type of threads instead. This lens isn't going to be cheap!

I surely hope they do make this. I would pay provided the QC is unlike the current models

The sad part is, I think you're right.
A 24-70 f2.8 IS should be a no-brainer compared to the 24-105 f4 IS, but I have a sinking feeling that Canon is going to price the 24-70IS around $1699, thus putting it out of reach of many.

I personally will be picking up a 24-105 f4 IS when I go FF as $1700 for 24-70 is too rich for me...

Has there been any type of confirmation that the 24-70 will be included in a kit with the 5DII?

I'm close to purchasing one but would rather save some money than buy both separately...

Yeah, it's been confirmed that it is still just a rumor. Look to previous history from Canon and see exactly how many times they've released a new kit after the body and initial kit was announced.

My guess is the 5D Mark II will only be available from Canon as either the Body Only or the EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM kit. If a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens is announced, any kits including it will most likely be a store kit.

I don't know anything more than anybody else, so take it with a grain of salt.

Here's a rumor that says they'll release the 24-70mm f/2.8L as a kit. http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/03/24-70-f28l-is-update/ (external link)

Oops, I meant the *CURRENT* 24-70 (no IS), but your point still stands.

I can get 10% off this month if I purchase it so I was just hoping if it was confirmed, it would be available for pre-order at least haha..

Thanks though!

A 24-70L IS would hold a lot of promise but I don't see this happening any time soon.
