So first of all, ill list what im using.

4xAA batteries
Canon 580EX II
5D/1D
Quantum Turbo

My 580EX II has the following CFs setup

Cf 01 - 1
Cf 06 - 1
Cf 12 -1

I have made sure the Quantum is charged (one red light, three green). Ive connected it all up with a Quantum CZ cable with everything turned off, switched on flash and camera then the Quantum.

Now it seems the flash is still drawing power from the internal batteries and no High Voltage light is showing up on the Quantum.

Im stumped so be grateful for any ideas to help resolve. Thanks

You have a red light lit up on the Turbo 2x2? Hmmm, I don't think I've ever seen a red light on mine. Is this red light one of four, the others being the three green lights you mentioned?

The only lights other than green I've seen on my Turbo 2x2 are the amber lights, one when charging and two others when a cable is plugged into the A and/or B ports.

By high voltage light, are you referring to the light for the A and B ports? If so, you may have a bad cable if the light isn't turning on.

This is just a Quantum Turbo not the 2x2.

Its got four LED lights, one red for a quarter power left, then green led's for half, three quarters and battery full.

Only one port for a flash and there is a high voltage light to the left of that.

Yeah, sorry. I just realized that you weren't talking about the 2x2 after I reread your post a couple of seconds ago.

Did you double check the cable at the flash end to make sure it was inserted correctly. The cable plug connector angles towards the front of the flash and not the back.

Yup, checked that also. Everything locks in well and powers up as normal, just tried a 430EZ and same thing, no recognition.

It could be a possibility the cable is suspect but without trying another, have no idea what else I could try.

I suspect a bad cable, too. If you have a continuity tester or a VOM, you can check the cable to see if any of the wires has shorted out or is broken.

Make sure your CZ fits snuggly to both ends, I had a bad connector on the Turbo once where you plugged in the CZ. Sometime it'd get lose & the 580ex drew power from the AAs.

More likely than not, it's the cable or the connector. Just make sure you don't have your turbo turned on without plugging it into your flash first. Worst case, ship it to Quantum & they'll fix it for you, assuming it's the QT problem.

The same thing happened to me awhile back. I went and got a new battery at Batteries plus, and that solved the problem. It was only about 30 bucks, and installation was a breeze.

Battery charges fine. I only just picked this up. Im going to contact the retailer and see what they will say about testing.

Seller of cable will agree to swap cable.

Got this from Quantums website

Notice: Current Owners of Canon 580EX II ( TYPE II ONLY)
and Turbo 2x2, Turbo SC, Turbo C
Important Operating Notice

Solution: Set Flash Custom Function #01 Auto power off to Disable (1)

Problem
The custom function on the Canon 580EX II is set to (0)enabled when shipped.
This function enables the flash go to sleep after a predetermined time of idling.
If custom function 01 is not turned off the flash will go to sleep and the Turbo Batteries will shut down.

If C.Fn 01 is not disabled you must turn the Turbo OFF and then ON otherwise it will not wake-up when the flash awakes.

Disabling this function will prevent the above Turbos from shutting down.

Connecting Procedure for Canon System / Canon 580EX II with above Turbos

If the procedure below is not followed the Turbo with not operate.

Mount flash to camera.

Connect Turbo long CZ/short CCZ flash cable between 580EX II & Turbo 2x2, Turbo SC or Turbo C.

Turn on camera and flash.

Turn on the Turbo last.

I had the same problem with my Turbo SC Slim. Make sure that you follow the connection instructions word for word.
Mount flash, then connect cable to the flash, power camera and flash, then power Quantum battery. Hope this helps.

Tried both of the above. Hopefully trying a new cable during the week to see if it makes any difference. If not, the Quantum goes back. Will keep this updated.
