If you are looking for a battery for the 5D2 Vistek has a ton of them.
Well at least the one in Mississauga does. I just got back with one.

$98 (US) for a battery is just rediculous. I firmly believed that Canon changed the battery from the BP511 in an attempt to push out the 3rd party makers. I mean, you can buy a BP511 for $15 from SterlingTek! But since Canon is the only maker right now, everyone gets shafted for $100 just for one battery. You don't really have a choice.

I agree. It is ridiculous for a battery but no other choice really especially since I don`t buy aftermarket batteries. I had problems with some before so I am avoiding them now.

I'm with you guys! But I just plunked down my $$ for one and am happy I did. I ended up needing both on my recent trip. BUT - I am not spending $300 for a grip that doesn't come with a battery.

Some stuff that says "Canon" on it and a happy trigger finger.

I got mine for $80, which included shipping, from Calumet in December. Granted, it's not priced like the BP-511A's I also use, but the capacity chip that communicates with the camera surely is the reason for the higher price.

To me, shooting my 5D Mk II with the grip and 2 batteries is well worth the money. I wouldn't say I have unmlimited shooting power, but I've never come remotely close to draining both batteries. The rig feels more solid, balanced and makes portrait shooting much easier.

Yeah, most thing's 5D Mk II-related are spendy. But when you get a Canon full-frame 21mp body for $2700, things kind of balance out, IMO.

dude i was thiniing the same, for 30 bucks you get the power but don't get the com chip built in info.. but seems janky..

i figured our 2700 dollar body deserves controlled power from OEM.. and dont' risk a problem with the 60 dollars savings.

phamster..

btw, do you have any good photos with your 5DmkII and the 85 1.2? that has to be the dream combo..

Anybody notice the lack of LP-E6's available on the market? This seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. Does anyone know WHY they seem to be sold out, back ordered, and just hard to find most places?

Yes, but be sure to remove the grip before you go to Antarctica! :-)

I picked up one from my local camera store in Austin for $75. Not to bad, I would email a manager and see if they pricematch a place that sells it lower...

I haven't gotten one yet. It's on backorder at Adorama and that's it.

You don't own a 5D Mk II. What do you care?

It's easy to charge less when you didn't have to pay for the research and development.

The inclusion of very useful Live View as well as video called for far more precise battery management than previous Canon cameras allowed. We essentially have a simple battery analyzer system built into the camera and battery, and if you've ever priced battery analyzers, you know they aren't cheap at all.

One immediate benefit to me is that I need fewer batteries. With the BP-511, I could never know whether a battery was about to lose rechargeability, so I had to keep a set in addition to the number I needed for operational rotation just in case of sudden death. But now I can see when a battery starts to decline and have plenty of warning to plan a new purchase...I don't need that extra set.

Some may argue that they could have built it all into the camera and continued to use the BP511. I don't know. But I know that compared to the 5D at its initial price and the Bp-511 batteries at their initial prices, the current combination from Canon is both greatly improved and less expensive.

Before we can accuse Canon of imposing a nefarious scheme merely to freeze out 3rd party manufacturers, we have to consider, first, that this change does indeed give us upgraded capabilities.

Second, we don't know yet if the identification chip in the camera is coded simply as an identifier or bears a code createable only through Canon. For instance, does the camera have a way to identify specific Canon chips, or can a chip just as well say, "My name is Joe" and be useable? If Canon does not use a secret coding pattern, then they can't be accused of attempting to freeze out 3rd party manufacturers at all.

Canon certainly has no obligation to retard its products for the sake of 3rd party manufacturers. Third party manufacturers just have to keep up.

I'd like to know the answer to this also. Been looking online and can't find one in stock anywhere in the US. What kind of company releases a camera like the 5D Mark II without having enough spare batteries to go around?

If anyone know where to get one please shoot me a PM.
