Has anyone every tried to sell their stuff to them via the web site? I sent in something for a few lenses that I have and have not heard anything in 2 weeks. Is this the usual deal or do I need to call and leave a voice mail?

Thanks for any input.

Kevin

I checked them out once, 1 day reply, but a lowball quote. I mean lowball.

Most people here recognize an item's value and will pay that reasonable amount, unless there is a boatload of your particular item out there for sale in the forum, then it goes down.

You'll probably get more selling it on the classifieds here than to a store.

Dear Kevin

I apologize that the used department do not appear to be on-the-ball at the moment. I could give them a prod for you, if you like, but you need to be aware that whatever you will be offered for your equipment, will be approx 70% of the assessed value, to cover departmental / advertising costs etc.

Let me know if you'd like me to chase the used department for you.

Sincerely

Helen Oster

70% is not bad. Not the greatest. Try BH, they will give you less. I believe keh.com would also give you less from the their online quote. For examples, Adorama would give me $900 for my 1dmarkII with a bit over 10k actuation. I believe I get extra 10% more with the trades if I am putting the value towards the purchase in the store. A typical pretty new 1dmarkII here goes for $1200 to $1300.

They fo have to turn a profit to make it worth their while.
Same deal as when you trade in a used car, you will never get book resale but wholesale value.
Helen is about spot on with 70% of its assessed value.

Thats really not bad, around here I tried selling my stuff at a local place 2 or 3 times, always gave up and went to Ebay because of the following:

1. They do things consignment, cash-only, very few people these days carry $400-500+ in cash, nor is it so easy to get sometimes with ATMs and that limiting you to $300 a day..

2. They do tend to put above fair value as we'd see it on most items, but also accept a lot of haggling...so usually stuff if its gonna sell gets haggled down BELOW fair value..and usually is sold because of the "frustration"

3. They take about 25% in fees....meaning, if you get say what you get for a lens here, they then take about 25% of that...

4. Stuff rarely does sell there it seems...i swear the same stuff is always in there save a few little things..

I'd take a hit to sell to Adorama or KEH becuase i know it would be sold fast, cash up front, that gives them more motivation to sell my items because they already paid me and need the return on investment, at this store its more they try to get you to buy new (Thus their used stuff is priced up near new)
